X-Box 360 or PS 3

Please don't lie about prices. If you want cheaper games, the Wii typically has new games at $50, while the PS3 and 360 are both at $60. Now naturally all video games drop in price after they've been out a while, so something that came out first on the 360 will obviously be cheaper first than the PS3 counterpart.

Are you referring to me? If the answer is yes I'd appreciate it if you didn't resort to slander. You could give me the benefit of the doubt and assume I simply made a mistake if you're information varies from mine.

Also, the thread title clearly states that the OP is or was not considering a Wii. So it's about 360 vs. PS3.

Anyway, down to the facts, machines first. The XBOX 360 itself is clearly cheaper than the PS3 in absolute terms. A brief look at Amazon, HMV, Game, or whatever (online) store you favor will quickly reveal that to be true.
Now, the equation can change quite a bit depending on how important certain features are to a potential buyer. For example, if you want a BluRay player, the PS3 clearly is an excellent deal.
Still, in this economic situation the fact remains that you have to part with less cash if you want a 360.

Concerning the games you should read what I wrote: "I think (and I may be wrong here) that the games are also usually a little cheaper on XBOX."

My own experience in HMV, Game or Zavvi has been that the XBOX versions of the same game tend to be around £ 5 less if not more. I'm not talking about RRP which may be the same for both but rather what people actually have to pay in stores. And, again, based on my own (limited, subjective, what not) experience you tend to get away with paying less for the XBOX versions. Why I don't know.

The XBOX 360 has been on the market longer so the following is logical to anyone who's followed the games market for years: "There's also a lot of budget titles to be had" [on XBOX].

So, Aragorn, if you were referring to me, I would like to see where you think I was lying. And for the record: I have an XBOX 360 myself but I'm by no means partisan. The main reason I got a 360 over the PS3 was the fact that the former had come down in price to a level where I was willing to spend. The PS3 had not.

like many say, it comes down to the games. based on the 2 examples you gave i'd say go with the 360. i dont think you'll be seeing halo pop up on the ps3 anytime soon.

In the states, new games that aren't or sale or something are exactly same price be it Xbox or PS3, $60.

I have noticed however that it seems to me anyway, in looking on ebay at used games, the PS3 prices seem to be a little less than a comparable used Xbox game. Certainly as a seller of my used PS3 games I always feel like I'm getting less than the Xbox versions. Not sure why this is, a smaller installed base of console users I guess. But that's been my experience.

But if you're willing to pay for online play, the 360 has a community full of FPS players if that sort of game is your top priority.

Most of whom are squealing pre-pubescent boys who bleat a lot of shit in your ear and then...kick your arse :(

Well, that's fair enough.

XBL is a very large and - ahem - robust community, but one could never accuse it of being sophisticated.

My advice - play online with lots of people. Without the microphone plugged in. :p

And be prepared to be called a "fag" a lot.

Very true.

When you play online games on PS3, nobody ever talks and you wish they would. On Xbox Live, everybody talks and you wish they'd shut the hell up.

I get the feeling that here in the UK there's always some kind of sale, deal, bargain, discount, whatever going on - even if it only applies to individual titles.
I haven't really checked out the second hand market yet. I must look out what they're asking for for pre-owned games at HMV or Game.
I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 games were a little cheaper in general due to the smaller installed base.

Ah, but the New Live Experience allows you to create private parties where you only hear each other-not the "little wankers" as a Brit buddy of mine likes to call them. This makes for a very relaxing, well-organized party. And if you decide you want to talk smack after a round you can always switch to "game chat", say your piece, then go back to party chat if the response is "unsophisticated". Not that me and mine would do this......;)

I've been quite happy with my 360 so far. I wouldn't mind a PS3 for the Blu-Ray player, but it's such a low priority, and I already have a bunch of HD channels and an upscaling DVD player, that I haven't been that interested in it. There are definitely some great FPS games and exclusives to the 360. XBox Live is pretty cool - despite some of those naughty 12-year-olds.

It's easy to find friends online, however, and once you've built up some friends, you won't need to play at random nearly as often and risk encountering Little Hellion99. On a couple of games I play, PS3 counterparts have said they have trouble finding games or people for certain situations, so that's the alternative risk.

Either way you can't go too far wrong.

If you're primarily an FPS gamer, the 360 controller is superior to the Dual Shock controller for those games (IMO). So because of that, in addition to the huge LIVE crowd where you'll never be short of people to play against online, I'd recommend the 360.

I can't stand the XBox controller. It's never felt comfortable in my hands, and that kills my enjoyment of just about every game I've played on it. That said, we've got both systems and honestly it comes down to whether or not you want to play certain games (or Blu-Rays, which are amazing). I think the PS3 is pretty much complete out of the box, whereas you have to buy a bunch of extra junk on the Xbox (ours isn't wireless, wtf is that?) By the time my roommate 'tricked out' his XBox with accessories that pretty much brought it up to par with the PS3 (minus blu-ray), he'd already spent just as much money as the PS3 cost anyhow so it's lower pricetag is slightly misleading.

On the bright side, if you buy an XBox now, chances are you won't be on your seventh one a year from now, unlike a lot of the early adopters.

Of the current consoles, the PS3 is the one I've played the least. Can't say too much about it.

Since you mentioned Halo as an example, that's exclusive to the Xbox. Gears of War 1 and 2 are great shooters exclusive to the Xbox as well. Mass Effect is kinda fun, though not strictly a shooter.

To be fair, the Xbox has some pretty serious reliability issues. You're pretty much guaranteed to have at least one hardware failure. Going by personal experience, you can probably expect about a year of casual play out of it before it needs to be replaced. At least you won't have to replace it out of pocket.

All in all, I've been pretty happy with it, other than the reliability. When it works, it runs pretty well, and there are some great titles for it.

The best(and most) FPSs are on 360. The on-line community is huge. The graphics are pretty tight. The Marketplace offers tons of stuff.

The PS3 has *taps lip reflectively* um, well, yeah.

You make the choice.

Next to nothing in comparison.

Also, so far on this Gen the 360 has more RPGs, more family games(vs the PS3, the Wii owns it in that dept. of course.), more inventive "Arcade" or small downloadable games, more console exclusives. And even big Sony exclusives in the past such as the Final Fantasy are going to be on the 360 now aswell. Has big selection of HD movies and TV shows to download, now has Netflix. Plus the controlers... the 360's is much more ergonomicaly designed and fits the hand well with real *cough*not pretend*cough* triggers. The PS3 controlers are poorly layed out and not very comfortable. Also the thumbsticks are far too loose.

And 360 has Gears of War 2... that kind of trumps all. :p

And I've owned three different 360's, two Premium and one Elite. None ever had any reliability issues.
And since they have upgraded the newer machines they have fixed most the issues anyways.

Simple rukl of thumb....

360 for single player or split screen games only.
PS3 for all other multiplat and online games.

That means you can enjoy the best of both worlds and you wont have to pay a yearly sub to play the online portion of any 360 game.

If the PS3 had anything beyond Blu-Ray worth offering... your post would still be backwards.

Sony's free online service is free for a reason, it's shitty and
doesn't offer you near the community or options that LIVE does.
I hope LIVE is never free, I prefer to pay for something
and actually get useful features and a playable online service.

It's less than 10 bucks a month, and it's not even a monthly thing to pay.
For the cost of one game you get an entire year of worthwhile online play.
Oh and besides actually playing online the rest of the features are free.

Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Valkyria Chronicles, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Warhawk, Wipeout HD, Yakuza Kenzan!, Yakuza 3, Folklore, MotorStorm, MotorStorm 2, Ratchet & Clank, Heavenly Sword, countless AAA multiplatform titles. Do you really wanna sit there and say the PS3 has nothing worth offering?

But what are we paying for? Nice community features? Why does that cost money? Facebook and MySpace, to say nothing of instant messaging services, and, umm, Steam all offer far more robust community options than Xbox Live does. They do it for free. And most of the community features on XBL are available to silver members anyway. So where's my money going?

...It sure as hell isn't going into the maintenance of a 'playable online service.' But then I guess that depends on how you define 'playable.' Xbox Live is down as often as the PSN is. More importantly, the lag on most Xbox Live games is atrocious, thanks to Microsoft skimping on the dedicated servers. By comparison, the vast majority of first party PS3 games have servers scattered across the globe, even right here in Australia. That means my bullets connect with their targets a split second after I pull the trigger...not the wall where they used to be standing 5 seconds ago.

Personally, I'd prefer to use that money to actually buy another game rather than pay for something that really should be free. But to each their own.
