Writers talk Sequel plans on MTV

Orci and Kurtzman discussed their first thoughts on the sequel to Star Trek.

"All the characters who existed in the universe or canon we grew up with are essentially still around in some capacity," Kurtzman explained. "But their lives have been altered, so they may again intersect with our crew."

"I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again... in fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."

"Now we're in this new world," Kurtzman agreed. "And we're just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future."

The MTV writer interprets Orci as saying Nimoy wouldn't appear in any future movie, but although I don't think he has to, he is definitely a part of the new universe, so I wouldn't count him as out because he came from the original.

Orci also said he's re-reading Star Trek novels and may want to reinterpret elements from them into the Star Trek we now have.

It's pretty exciting.

There's video of Orci and Kurtzman via the link. Have a look.

I like this part. Now we're in this new world," Kurtzman agreed. "And we're just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future." I like that, UNPREDICTABLE FUTURE part.

The UNKNOWN. I like that idea. Trek has been so weighed down with canon that it became predictable to me (and, apparently, others).
I like this UNKNOWN! It's exciting!

Thats pretty cool and I would have been happy if they confirmed that red mass erased the dreaded Reset Button. But anyway I think its a good thing they found a way to re-introduced a sense of peril and danger for this crew and this universe.
