Not sure how Carol forbidding Kirk from being in David's life makes him a "deadbeat dad."
Kirk: "I did what you wanted. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?"
Carol flat out stated she wanted David with her and not knowing his dad was Jim Kirk and risking losing him to a life of space adventure. It was her decision. We don't know anything about Kirk and Carol's relationship. It could have been a one-nighter. It's not uncommon for unwed mothers to want to raise the kid her own way with no involvement from a man she doesn't want to spend her life with. Her decision, her custody, and the dad's aren't deadbeats if they don't choose to be uninvolved.
And look what happened as soon as David went on a starship. He got shivved.
And it's not like today, where Kirk needs to send child support and whatnot.
Kirk was fine. He had a son and since he wasn't able to be part of David's life, he just went on with his own. Judging by his reaction, Kirk wished he could have been there.
