WoW - Musings & Discussion

I am firmly in the grip of pre-expansion apathy at this point. I still log on for raid night but don't really play casually any more.

I've been playing here and there. With the number of hours I was working up until a few weeks back, I've been less inclined to spend what free time I had playing WoW. Plus, I've got a rather huge backlog of console games and movies/shows on Blu-Ray to get through.

I've been leveling a druid here and there with my brother and his friend. I've also been doing the occasional bg and gearing up some of my alts. I have way too many characters between being out of work 8 months last year and RAF. My druid is almost 79 and will be my 6th level 80. I need to cut down what I play to one or two. I'm trying to decide between my paladin and warrior for my main for Cataclysm, and then pick one of my other alts to also work on here and there.

As far as Cataclysm goes, I'm generally excited about it. From some of the videos I've seen, the new areas all look great. But I'm still kind of leery about some of the class changes. I'd love to get an invite to see some of them in action, especially Holy Power.

I really only have one main per expansion. For Vanilla it was Pally, then Hunter for BC and DK for Wrath. I'm thinking Priest for Cat.

I've always had one main, as well. And never so many max level characters until this expansion. I've been trying to juggle which of my alts to focus on with my free time. That was a priest for awhile there, though that got sidetracked when I started running heroics on all of them to farm primordial saronite. Talk about heroic burnout.

I had one 60, my first warrior, in Vanilla, and two 70s in TBC. My main was a mage. The second one was a warlock I didn't get to 70 until well sometime after 2.4 came out. The most I did with him was some Kara alt runs.

Just played the quests leading up to and the Echo Isles event itself, got an item that turns you into a Darkspear troll, a grey cape (it has been suggested I keep that to see if it can be used for something later), and an achievement called "Zalazane's Fall".

I just did the event quests but they left me a little disappointed. For something that had so much buildup over the last few months, the whole thing seemed really light and almost pointless. Done in 15 minutes. It seemed the sort of thing they could have presented as a cutscene at the beginning of Cata or something, like the Wrathgate event.

On the other hand, the quests gave a huge amount of free XP, so I dinged on all but 1 of my non-80 toons. :)

It's just the very first in a chain of events over the next couple of months, I don't think there was that much hype for it, other than the fact that people were interested in seeing some new content. And it was fun for what it was. Not Wrathgate/Undercity event fun, but interesting and another taste of the kind of phased events we're going to see a lot more of in Cata.

Wow, 5-mans might actually be fun again? Maybe I will stay around for more than a couple of weeks then.

Watching Grim Batol kind of takes me back to playing UBRS. :techman:

interesting... i've heard this before about the hype and don't really see it... there were two pages put up months ago about the event, and that was it.

as for doing a cutscene instead, i imagine that the devs felt this would kinda be an interactive cutscene. that it would be more fun to participate in an event like this than just see a video of it and then boom, it's new. it also allows the players to feel ownership of the event. in a few years players can look back at the event, and the gnome/troll starters and feel that they helped contribute personally. something a cutscene cannot do.

My understanding is that for Cata we will get 3.9 first which will be game mechanics only (except increased level cap). 4.0 will coincide with the retail release and will be the new content including 1-60.

The cloak was meant to be an overcloak, that goes over your existing one but Blizzard retracted that with a very lame excuse about hiding your cloak's true ilevel (as opposed to the always-been hiding it out right option). Some people have taken the GM quote about not vendoring it as a sign this might change in the future.

The event itself is only a lead up to the events leading up to Cataclysm and is more an introduction for the new Troll Druid and Gnomish Priest (I think, I've yet to do the Alliance version).

There will be far more steps in the build up to the actual Cataclysm including the new race/class combos, new trees, etc. Then we'll get the actual game changes with new zones when the expansion itself is out or just before. I'm not sure how that'll work beyond some tenative comments on how they plan to do it. Regardless of whether you've got the expac or not, you'll see the revamped zones as if you did (new 80-85 stuff and flying excepted for those who do buy the expac).

Bump. PTR has the pre-Cata patch going on now. New talent trees, UI, etc. Basically everything EXCEPT new race/class combinations, goblins and worgens or the revamped zones.

^Yep, the new game mechanics are up on PTR, but no new content.

Considering Azeroth flying is going to be purchasable at level 60, I am betting you will be able to get it with even a vanilla account.

No, you will need a Cataclysm account to fly at 60. They don't want people who don't have it to get flying and then run into invisible walls when they try to fly into areas that are expansion-only.

I've just rolled a Dwarf Hunter after seeing all of the new pet buffs (Bloodlust? Yes please!). I forgot how much fun they are to level with.

I named mine, appropriately, Boomstiq.

Color me confused. Blizz made a big deal about spell power and attack power going away, but MMO-champion just posted a bunch of weapons you get from archeology and some of them have spell power??

That's because they want weapons to be nice upgrades for Spellcasters since they don't use the actual dps of the weapons and they thought that adding so much INT would be game breaking. SP will only appear on weapons, AFAIK.

Yeah, weapons are the only thing that should have spellpower on them. No gear should normally carry any. Attack power I'm not as clear on but I believe it's in the same boat; not on armor normally anymore.

Correct on the weapons.

Here's a summary of what we know about patches and content from 3.9 through the launch.

MMO Champ is also now reporting a close source that says they'll announce a November 2nd launch date at Blizzcon, which is weeks earlier than had been predicted.
