Pally and Ret. And yeah, as I've been going through I've put points into what looked good, but I'm really crap at knowing how to play the game and you guys would have a fit if you saw how I play. I want to maximize my killing power on BGs as a Ret Pally, and am possibly looking into playing Holy as a Dual Spec.

Thanks for any help. :)

Here's a short guide to Protribution.

Here's a more comprehensive forum post on the subject.

And here's a typical Protribution build.

(Edit: As for feeling lost on the EJ forums, that is kind of the point. The guild hosting these forums isn't called <Elitist Jerks> for nothing. ;P)

I'd recommend reading the EJ ret pally thread, at least. It's more oriented towards raiding, but a lot of what's in there will still apply. You'll still be using the same clash resolution and what not. A lot of the differences are getting to know your defensive abilities, though those things can certainly help in pve, as well.

I'll try to find some ret pvp specs. Though, you can pretty much get away with using any old raid spec. My spec is pretty much the cookie cutter raid spec with a couple points in Divine Purpose so I can HoF out of stuns.

I'd recommend hitting some heroics to get a nice 2h. Tyrannical Beheader from Pit of Saron is the you're going to get without raiding. There's a few other 2h that are decent that drop out of H TOC, and normal PoS and HoR. Hopefully your luck will be better than I had with my warrior. I was about to give up on it after several weeks of farming them all and not seeing one. Luckily the second Tyrannical Beheader only took another day or two drop after the first.

Protribution is also a lot of fun. That's pretty much gearing like a ret paladin aside from a 1h and shield. You don't have quite as much offensive capability as you would as ret, but you're pretty tough to kill. (Well, you might have more if you glyph for avenger's shield. I use my tank spec with tanking glyphs. I'm too cheap to go back and forth for pvp and then pve with either ret or prot specs :p) I've heard this guy is one to check out for that. He's currently in Tier 2 right now, but he's a good one to look at for gemming and what not. His primary spec is protibution. EDIT - Or follow the links in SPCTRE's post. Lots of good stuff there.

I've never tried Holy, but it seems ridiculous, even without a ton of gear. My brother re-specced his paladin to holy awhile ago. Even in junk blue gear, he was doing well. You'll be squishy until you get some resilience, but you can still keep people up. I've been tempted to try it out on my paladin. I love healing as disc on my priest in pvp. As much fun as it is to kill people, it's almost more fun to deny the other faction kills. Bringing people back up from a few % to full health so they can keep fighting is a blast.

I don't PVP but I do agree running some heroics will help a lot to get gear for PVP. You'll still be able to get PVP gear from BG's but it's a lot faster to do it through emblems at first I'd think, less time being a corpse on the ground and all. :p

Battlegrounds don't need a spec. Heck, you can just go afk and get your points, don't worry about playing your character at max.

No offense, but I hate people like that in BGs and I report them immediately. As bad as bots, just taking up space to the detriment of others.

Kestra, please don't listen to this advice.

i dunno... i am mixed... if you want to always duel wield daggers as a rogue because it is fun for you in BGs, i say go ahead, the build doesnt matter if you dont enjoy playing it.

but i definitely don't think you should just /afk in a BG. that sucks and certainly deserves reporting.

I was illustrating my point, not actually recommending going afk.

Thanks for all the links! I'd never heard of Protribution but I've been checking it out since you guys mentioned it. I love two-handed though, so would suck if I need to switch to a 1H.

Yeah see, I really really don't want to run heroics or any other dungeons. I'm trying to avoid that because I decided I'm not going to do anything in the game that I don't consider fun. I don't even know what half of what you said means!

Yeah, even as Ret I've healed a few times. My heals are really pathetic and kill my mana, but I do agree there's something awesome about bringing someone back when they think they're going to die, especially if that person is the FC in WSG. Plus I know how much I appreciate it when people heal me, so it seems like it might be fun to try. Plus we never have healers!

Thanks, yeah everyone tells me to run heroics. How it's so easy, you can get all this gear and extras, etc. I did that a little bit on my mage and just didn't enjoy the overall experience. I actually quit the game for awhile and PvP is the only thing that makes me want to play now.

for a small period of time i was running a druid through BGs as a healer... healers can easily sway a fight... but i haven't used my druid in a long while, and i was super low level, so my heals weren't great. i did have a level 10 paladin top the healing in a couple BGs (there wasn't much i could do at that level anyways)

again, you should do what you think is fun. like using 2h, then do it. i have a friend who leveled a gnome frost mage and loved it (because gnomes are soo goofy and people get soo angry at them) another friend convinced them to try raiding, so he faction swapped his character to a troll, did a few raids, but didnt care for the character as much, redid them as a bloodelf, but still didnt like the character... he pines away for his days as a gnome. i suspect when Cataclysm launches he'll switch the mage back to a gnome.

in the end, it's all about how you want to have fun... people seem to forget that and place too much of an emphasis on min/maxing

I don't think so. People who enjoy min/maxing will min/max, people who don't, won't. That's all there is to it. Everyone has a choice.

Agreed. There are guilds out there that will reject you outright if you don't copy the exact spec from Elitist Jerks. I've personally seen where people with oddball specs can still pull good numbers.

While my account is inactive right now, most of my recently active characters are on Runetotem - Horde.

I think I have a 70 Ally Hunter on Dark Iron.

Yeah. I can see that. I've been doing a lot of heroic grinding lately on my alts, and it's easy to get sick of doing them. Unfortunately, there are certain items that you can't get outside of doing heroics or raiding, mainly weapons. Unless you want to do arena. I've been hearing they're going to change the availability of pvp weapons in Cataclysm. Really, I'm not sure why pvp weapons in particular have been more difficult to get when a lot of the other gear is easy to farm.

Oh, and Emerald Dream Alliance

We can, uh... see your TBBS name just fine, Kestra. ;)

I'm on Cho'gall.

Running heroics can be fun if you do it with a couple of friends who aren't completely over-geared for the content. Running as fast as you can behind a 65k health pally and his 12k dps rogue buddy while you try to get a cast or two off per trash pull isn't fun. Enough gear so you aren't wiping, but enough that you still have to pay attention to tactics. Also, even if you don't want to end-game raid, you can use the emblems you earn running heroics to buy PvP gear, something you need in BGs these days just to stay alive long enough to have fun.

Do you play with any RL friends or do you have any in-game friends to talk in Ventrilo/Skype with while you play?

I use the email address "seanpfoster@gmail.com" on Real ID if anyone wants to add me on Battle.net/World of Warcraft.

Shandris realm

A bunch of silly Night Elf chicks named Slikk (80 rogue), Slik (40 drood), Slykk (49 rogue), and Slyk (80 dk), a Troll shaman 14 named Zlikk, and a Blood Elf pally 45 named Sunwalker.

I also have a Nelf dk 60 on Proudmoore, and a Belf dk 59 on Darrowmere.

Everyone failed. You were supposed to quote it, put your own name under it. I was just starting it.

I'm not nerdy enough to do Vent. I tried it but it's too weird for me. I don't have any RL friends to play with either. I used to have fun with my guild but then they split up and the hardcore raiders left, and they were the people I liked. They wanted me to join their guild even if I didn't want to raid, but I was kinda disenchanted with the whole thing.

I really just don't like running dungeons.

I saw what you tried to do there Kestra.

I'll add my name to the list- I'm on Silvermoon. I'd do the quote thing but nobody else did, so why break a trend.
