I'm afraid I'm one of the JJ haters - I disliked what he did to both Star Trek and Star Wars.

I'd really rather he was kept well away from any franchises I enjoy.

Permanently.

I remember reading that he mentioned being a Star Wars and not a Star Trek fan. In which case, I don't see why he should return.

You remember wrong.

Also, why does one’s fandom level or lack of exclude a person from working on a movie?

As I recall, Harve Bennett wasn’t a fan before he started making Trek, but immersed himself in the world and appreciated it from there. Same with Abrams.

Also, he didn't do very well in Star Wars, as the movie he had is basically a rehash of content from the original trilogy.
He did two.

Bear in mind the time-frame Abrams would have been growing up (he was 11 when the first one was in theaters, 14 for Empire, 17 for Jedi) when Star Wars was what most people his age were watching and such Star Trek movies as existed then were mostly exercises in nostalgia made for (then 20- and 30-something) fans of the original TV series (i.e., decidedly not aimed at his age group).

He was hired to do a particular job, and he delivered what was ordered. Or were you under the impression that he just made something and the studio was like "Oh, well -- it's not what we had in mind, but I guess we'll take it" ?

Abrams is between 5 and 6 years older than me. All I can say is, regardless of who the Trek films were aimed at, TWOK and TSFS were basically the reason I was into Trek around that time. ( I missed TMP in the theater, knew of TOS due to syndication and even had a Trek comic book in TPB format in the late 70s and maybe an action figure or two. )

I got into Trek from watching TNG in its original run with my dad, and watching TOS and the TOS-era movies on tape so often I wore out the local video shops tapes. At the time I had no idea TOS was from the 60s, or that the movies were exercises in nostalgia. To me they were all just good fun adventures.

Sure why not? I mean, it will never happen….but I suppose in theory I’d be supportive.
