Would you turn in a family member?

Sadly, I was recently faced with a situation like this with my own brother. I don't want to go into details, but it was a very serious, dangerous crime/situation. I will never forgive him for putting his family's lives in danger and would've, after pleading with him to turn himself in, turned him in myself. My life would've immediately been threatened, but so be it.

Lucky for him, he had already run and so when the fugitive task force raided my place looking for him (which grates me even to this moment), I had nothing to tell. He did turn himself in, eventually.

I pray (really) that none of you ever have to face that situation. Ever.

Edit: I can't believe I actually typed that! Oh well, it's a matter of public record, anyway.

I think, as with many people, it would depend on what they did.

If it was just some misdemeanour, then no, I wouldn't report them.

You expect family members to exercise a little influence on each other's behalf, and to do each other little favours. Overlooking misdemeanours falls under that category, IMHO.

But if they commit some kind of serious crime--they're on their own.

At the very least, I wouldn't help them--and if they came to me for help, I'd tell them to fuck off. If they tried to call me, I'd hang up on them. If they cared about the rest of the family, they wouldn't try to make us accessories. If they cared about the rest of the family, I would expect them to do the right thing, and protect the rest of us from the consequences of their fuckup.

My brother was once fired for embezzlement. He got no punishment otherwise. I didn't hear this until after the fact. I would not have turned him in (he IS my brother after all), but just to give you an idea of the kind of person he is, he would have framed me for it if he'd thought of it.

Actually, I have thought about calling the police in a counsin of mine. He's a good guy, and he did several things to get his life back on track, but he does drugs now and the last time I spoke to him (he doesn't have a phone anymore) he was so whacked out he didn't even know his address. He lives in another state, so it's out of the jurisdiction here and I can't prove he is still on them, or know where he is, or recall the name of hte city he is in ... it leaves me with little to work with. For his own good I should turn him in.
