Would you like looks, uniforms and such re-imagined?

When?

Thinking through all the episodes I can recall at the moment, the RNZ only caused problems, and it never stopped either the Romulans or Federation from crossing into the other side whenever they really wanted to.

This.

It was never once demonstrated to be useful - just a potential for provocation, over and over.

I don't know if the Romulans paid for it, but a wall in space (in the form of the neutral zone) was brought into existence. A large number of times, the RNZ was shown to be a good thing to have.

Good fences make good neighbors.
There was the occasion where it broached some measure of cooperation between the two powers. Also, the Federation and the Romulan Empire are sovereign nation, so identifiable boarders are a practical and important distinction.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'll say this.

Firstly, I don't know if we are getting a trailer this week. I don't work on Discovery, but I know a few who do. I have seen some behind the scenes stuff of the show, but not very much. I don't think most fans are purists, but I can tell you it will NOT look like TOS. Like, not even remotely. So you'll just have to accept a visual reboot. It's modernized like the look of the Kelvin universe, but it doesn't really look like that either. I think some fans will love the look and others will have a knee-jerk dislike of it because it's not like TOS, but then may warm up to it over time. I just recommend you go into a trailer with a completely open mind if we get one later this week.

To me, the "looks" of the show aren't nearly as important as the story being told. Balance of Terror still is a great episode in its late 60's dressing.

I mean, come on. A couple hundred years from now we'll be closer to the Borg than Starfleet, we'll be plugged into everything half cybernetic beings. We're halfway there now with all these fucking people walking around with their stupid phones plastered to their faces ignoring the reality around them.

so the uniforms do have department colors, ostensibly

I always make uniforms and wanted to make these ones. I am now terrified of the cost of just fabrics - that delta pattern on the side is a great detail, not one I'm loving the prospect of reproducing! :p

Love the subtle nod to the old colour scheme - silver matching the pastel blue, the reddish bronze for ops and goldest of gold for captains.

And ranks on the pins! Didn't notice until this morning Michelle Yeoh had four pips compared to the singular one we saw in the production vid!

Indeed, there are definite Kelvinverse design cues, the field jacket shoulders, the metal pin, the Delta material, and what looks like a Starfleet patch on the front of the spacesuits.

While I would prefer the original timeline to the Kelvin timeline, I'm more interested in if it's an entertaining scifi TV show with spaceships and people doing things in space. That's what I want, and why I like The Expanse. I am not picky about the uniforms, the Klingon makeup, or if our heroine is all human or only part human or the hardware of the show not in seeming continuity.

Is the show going to entertain me? That's all I'm interested in, and it's the basis to which I will (or won't) watch any TV show, scifi or not.

Oh i agree entirely. But I love costumes, so I'm going to pick them apart :)

LOL. I wanted an original Constitution class ship in the series, I may not get what I wanted either. We're all in the pre-judgement phase. Right now I hugely support what's been done so far, and what I know about the series. What I'm thinking after actually seeing the first episode could be an entirely different thing.

Me too. Trailer was about as good as I could have hoped, so I love what I've seen so far. Doesn't mean the show will automatically be good, but it's a really good start.

Well we have our answer. Reimagining®

I honestly didn't think blue uniforms would look great if they were all blue, but the department colors worked into them looks pretty terrific. These might be my favorite Trek uniforms.
