Would TNG have been appreciated in the sixties ?

I can only imagine what they'd have thought about what happens to Remmick at the end of "Conspiracy".

I doubt it. I think TNG would have seemed a bit too slow and talky for the mid-60s audience.

Actually, average runtimes were around 10 minutes longer in the 60s than the 80s. 60s audiences would have wondered where the rest of the episode was and why it was so short.

And talky.

I'd say that judging by the current state-of-play between the United States and Russia, TNG's suggestion about the thawing of the cold war being analogous to the relationship between the Klingons and Federation becoming friends is more than a little premature. But I disgress.

One startling thing I realized a while back that seperates the NextTrek era from that of TOS was of course a much more diverse cast of characters. Sure there's still a majority of 'Earth humans', but beginning with TNG there was greater diversity.... two aliens in the regular cast (Deanna and Worf), plus the android. The spinoffs followed suit. TOS, in the 1960s at least, really only represented the 'alien' with one character out of a main cast otherwise dominated by humans. I wonder how a more diversely non-human cast would've been recieved in the sixties? I always adored that TAS addressed that, but of course that was the 1970s, not the sixties.

I was talking about the pacing of the show, rather than its length. But funny. :)

TOS episodes usually clock in at 50 minutes. TNG in its first season was 47 minutes, there was only a difference of three minutes.

I was thinking there were some 54 minute TOS episodes and TNG was at 45 minutes. I didn't go check so was just off the top of my head.

OH, and TOS seasons were longer.

The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone were cerebral and ponderous.
It wasn't all wacky action back then.
