Would the US ever elect a president that is not married?

Well, the presidency itself aside, I certainly wouldn't wish the rigors and indignities of a modern presidential campaign on an individual without a stable and supportive life partner.

Same goes for the everyday stresses of the office also, I suppose.

Why? There are probably CEOs/generals with similarly stressfull positions that are single. Gary Johnson is running for pres as a batchelor and i dpn't think he has any problems because of that reason.

Did most presidents cheat on their viwes? Smart and creative people have big sex drives. Even MLK took some ladies to the other ''mountaintop''.

I read in a news paper recently that middle age starts around 45 now because people are living longer and continuing to have children in their 40s.

I can't say that the marital status of a candidate, would be high on my list of what does a candidate need to get my vote. After all I now it sounds radical but I place more empathise on things like are they the best person for the job.

Let's go with voting in a woman as president first.. then you can think about having a non-married one or a gay one *gasp*

If we did it before, we can do it again.

Agreed. The presidential election process may have flaws, and the people may have some rather odd views of what their president should be, but a single president would not face roadblocks because of that. As you said, it's already happened, even though it was decades ago.

With an unmarried (and presumably childless) president, I can imagine outcry that he can't relate to American families and their problems and concerns, he wouldn't know about their struggles.

I'm don't really have any opinions on these questions, I just think these are subjects that would appear in the media regarding a bachelor candidate/president.

No doubt they would, but just as families have problems and cocerns so do single people. With focus on familiy are those being ingnored or pushed to the side lines?

I think there is a more interesting question here: Would the United States ever elect an Atheist President?

Not in the current political climate, where Right Wing throwbacks must be appeased to some degree by either party. It would also be difficult, for the same reasons, to elect a single president, even though we've had a couple before. Since the number of people who choose to remain single is continuously rising, that will probably change before the atheist issue will even come up.

And, by the way, middle age starts at 52 this year. Next year it goes up again.

Blecch...it's Giant Douche v. Turd Sandwich again.

I so wanted an alternative to Obama, but Romney isn't it for me.

We did it twice before so I imagine we could easily do it again, though in this era of the mass media examining every bit of a candidate's personal and private life with an electron microscope and so many people equating not being married with having something wrong with you I don't know if we'll elect another bachelor President anytime soon.

But no, it's not out of the realm of possibility in the future. Depends on the person and what they stand for so them being unwed will wind up meaning little.

Just for the record: Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan, and Chester A. Arthur were single during their entire time in office. All but Buchanan were widowers.

John Tyler, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and Woodrow Wilson were single during part of their terms. Tyler and Wilson lost their wives and remarried while in office. Harrison lost his wife but did not remarry while in office. Cleveland married for the first time in office.

Buchanan was the only president to remain a bachelor all his life. And what's more, it's possible he was gay!

(Note: Just like the assertion that Abraham Lincoln was gay, the evidence is sketchy at best.)
