Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

JL sounds weird. It just has no good ring to it and it also makes as an abbreviation no sense. Saying Jean-Luc takes just as much time as those two letters. If they wanted a nickname for Picard why not just Jean, Luc or J? At least it would be shorter and all options have a better sound than JL in my opinion.
Nicknames aren't about brevity. People at work call me "Mikey". It has the same amount of syllables as Michael.

I'd get a kick out of it if she would use the French pronunciation of J and L. Some fans would be totally confused.
Going by the reaction to Patrick's French lines they should steer clear of French dialogue unless they grab native speakers. Sometimes I wonder in an alternate universe how Rene Auberjonois, for example, would have been as a French speaking Picard.

How much does Vincent Cassel cost? :P

wait till you hear Rios Emergency Chef Hologram

Are we talking late 90s/early 00s Vincent Cassel or current Vincent Cassel?
Since time travel hasn't been invented I guess the current version will do.

Bring in Marion Cotillard while we're at it too. I have no idea who they'll play. :O

I don't see a problem here. We know he likes to be called Jean Luc:

In that case, he'd be much cheaper to get than 10-20 years ago. And, after eight episodes of Westworld, probably not totally against appearing in a Sci Fi TV show.
Season two of PIC might feature the return of René Picard, thought to be dead for twenty years, but feeling much better now.

Yeah, I've seen so many people complain about how "unrealistic" "JL" is as a nickname because it's not really "shorter" than Jean-Luc syllable-wise, and make weirdly specific claims like that in Germany nicknames are only given to shorten names six syllables or longer (which proves nothing but that that person apparently doesn't know what syllables are).

But people use nicknames for all kinds of reasons. Sisko decided to call Jadzia "old man" pretty much from day one (despite the fact that at that point he didn't know her and only Dax) because Dax used to be in an older, male body last time he saw them. My brother's name is Robert and I call him Pubert (which has the exact same number of syllables) ever since we watched Addams Family Values as kids.

Raffi calling him JL is a shortcut to show us that they had a close relationship and she wasn't just a random officer working under him, it's neither a big deal nor out of character for Picard.

It was also an efficient way to indicate that Raffi was not Riker 2.0 and that she had a different kind of working relationship with Picard.

Works for me.
