I'm not sure why T'Pol would need him as an ally, unless Mayweather knew far more about Vulcans than the rest of the crew, which didn't seem to be the case.
Mayweather would be seen as an example of a logical human.
“My father always kept it at point eight G. He thought it put a little spring in his step.”
When Travis said that line in the pilot, I was immediately intrigued. I couldn’t wait to see how someone born and bred in space would add their unique understanding to the crew. Turns out I was going to wait forever…
Maybe being silent and listening to orders and general advice is the experience he has to offer. He never seemed to go against any of T’Pol’s suggestions or recommendations, unlike Archer.
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded seeing T'Pol and Mayweather sharing stories over the dangers of space travel and finding a way to manage based on their experience, in contrast to the rest of the crew's inexperience. You think if T’Pol had caught him sitting upside down from the NX-01’s ‘sweet spot’ then she would have drawn that conclusion?
I think if anything, T’Pol and Hoshi might have made a good pair. There’s at least hints towards that in Season 1 toward the end.
Not necessarily. Every writer has their strengths, be it drama, interpersonal interactions, comedy or action. It's not unusual to be strong in one area but lacking in others. Creating "believable science fiction" unfortunately is a very different standard for many people. For me, most SF enters the realm of fantasy because it largely ignores aspects of humans being in space in order to create believable drama for a contemporary audience.Someone on a sci-fi show ought to be good at crafting believable science fiction though, shouldn’t they?
The only real friendships people had were between Archer and Trip, and Trip and Reed. T'Pol, Hoshi, Phlox and Mayweather did not have any real friendships with the rest of the crew, other than one episode where Phlox befriended Cutler. And of those last four, the only logical person I would see T'Pol trying to have a friendship with would be Phlox, due to the nature of them both being aliens serving on an Earth vessel. I see zero indication that T'Pol and Mayweather would have any kind of connection other than perhaps Travis's knowledge of space. But since his experience was never even a factor in the show normally, it wouldn't have made a difference here.
While I love and respect T’Pol and think she deserved more love and respect than she received (especially from TPTB), I wish Travis’ unique upbringing had given him more than “ability to see that the Vulcan has a point.” I can’t even articulate what that would be, like I said, I’m here for the romance, I never claimed to be adept at crafting believable science fiction. (That being said, giving Travis a romance would have been A-OK in my book, what’s with shoving all these beautiful people together and then nobody gets even an approximation of a happily ever after?)
Someone on a sci-fi show ought to be good at crafting believable science fiction though, shouldn’t they? And why go out of your way to point out this unique background and then pretty much never utilize it? Can you imagine if, in the original, after going out of their way to tell and show us Spock was half Vulcan, it only came up again in one or maybe two episodes? This human was born and raised in space. We, the rest of the humans on board, have perhaps visited space like people visit the Grand Canyon but we’re now going to be living in it for the foreseeable future and nah, nothing to ask? Nothing to see here, move along.
No, Phlox and Hoshi are friends, as Phlox was teaching Hoshi Denobulan, and Hoshi often dropped by sickbay to chat with him in every season. There was even a deleted scene where Phlox continues the Denobulan lessons with Hoshi while tending to her injuries from the Romulan mine Enterprise hit.
And Mayweather did get a romance at the very end of the show. Even though it was hinted he would get together with a MACO in the third season.
This shows how assiduously I have avoided the end of the show. Also, my preference for romantic plots are those that last entire seasons, or entire show runs. Give me all the getting to know each other, getting to trust each other, getting to love each other plots! I want every minor detail! (And no, in case anyone is wondering, this does not mean I would be better suited to watching things billed as romances because then they use stupid plot-stretching devices like love “triangles” and asinine miscommunication snafus that make me want to throw things at the screen. Things not billed as romances have, you know, actual plot that breaks up the romantic tidbits rather than contrivances.)
Maybe more romance and less decon chamber could have saved the show?

True, but up until S3, Star Trek: Enterprise had no strong areas in the writing department.
Damn. Foiled again!Anyone who doesn't want Captain Archer to come back as Scott Bakula is a Xindi spy and Romulan collaborator!
