Worth watching SGU?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, I was a huge fan of SG1 and SGA. i particularly enjoyed the space battles in both shows. i've seen the pilot of SGU and man, I really struggled to finish watching it.

does the show get better and become more action packed?

btw, the casting seemed terrible as well. why did they choose an overweight kid for the role? surely putting overweight kids on TV and calling it 'cool' is sending out a terrible message to the youth of today where obesity is becoming an increasingly critical health problem.

thanks

Don't bother. I've seen some of your previous threads asking for movie and sci-fi tv recommendations, and there were many recommendations in those threads that are far more worthy of your time than SGU.

It's not presented as "cool" or "uncool." Eli's weight isn't much of an issue either way. It's simply a fact, and therefore is more realistic than every single person being in perfect shape and very telegenic.

ummm no, the second half of the season finally gets the story rolling but it is very slow paced and underwhelming and overly dramatic.. basically if you are looking for sg-1/sga humor, action and pace you wont find it on SGU it is a slow paced character drama.

In short, no, the show has yet to become particularly action packed, at least in the 21 episodes I've seen so far. It's a bit of a departure from SG-1 and SGA, and not one that has pleased a lot of fans (including this one). From the looks of your post, I'd say skip it.

Eli or, the "overweight kid," is obviously meant to be a proxy for the audience, with plenty of wish-fulfillment elements thrown in (i.e. becoming part of an intergalactic space program by solving a puzzle in a MMORPG). He can be entertaining at times, but the whole notion of his character is too silly for me to take seriously. And the film nerd in me will never get over the character naming something KINO, but not being at least aware of BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969).

Its nothing like the other 2 series as this is alot more slow paced I for one don't mid that its different. If I where you though I wouldnt bother watching as its going to be axed after s2 anyway.

Nope. I'd recommend the show to you if you disliked the other Stargates, but I don't think there's many people out there who love both Atlantis and Universe.

I have to agree.

SGU is the DS9 of gate. After coming off two shows (TOS/TNG & SG1/SGA) that were basically the same thing and what the viewers tuned in for. it's a total wheel jerk in the opposite direction.

SGU has its flaws, but I'd recommend you give it a try and see for yourself if you like it.

I thought the second half of the first season was a slight improvement but I have not liked the second season so far.

Well, mark me as one who definitely enjoys both shows. Most of the complaints with SGU seem to be people wanting it to be something else and hating it for not being that, instead of just enjoying it for what it is.

for what it is is boring me to tears!!:brickwall:

I liked Voyager, and I like SGU from what I've seen.

I also didn't like NuBSG.

Weird combo, huh?

For what you're looking for, it's probably not worth watching. As others have said there not much action at all.

Pay no attention to these hypocrites, RaW.
That's a statement that requires elucidation.

I really enjoy Universe, and I have to agree that calling them hypocrites makes no sense. :wtf:

Me too. :techman:

Most who dislike it dislike it solely because it's not like the previous two shows? I find that very hard to believe. Can you back that up? I mean, I've seen some who make that complaint, but with many of them it seems they dislike it for what it is, as well.

It's different. It's not as funny, it tries a bit too hard to be serious, the characters aren't as charismatic or likable (with a few exceptions), it's not as fast-paced, there are hardly any space battles, there are no real 'villains' and we're still not sure what's going on. But it is interesting, at least in my opinion. There's conniving, there's plotting, there's politicking, there's backstabbing...it's a sci-fi human drama rather than a sci-fi comedy drama. If you're looking for more 'classic' Stargate, it's not what you want but if you want to enjoy a human drama that happens to take place in the Stargate 'verse, it can be quite entertaining.

And I like all three series. :)

I like the idea behind SGU, but I don't think its being executed very well. For the record, I also liked the idea behind SGA, but also felt it was not executed well.

What are the more popular/well-received seasons of Stargate SG1? I've caught about a dozen or so episodes over the years, liking a good number of them. Anderson was a hoot... kind of a take-two on MacGyver. I know he left the primary spot and served in secondary appearances to help keep things going. But... when did SG1 take a turn for the worse? And were there no worthwhile episodes after that?

I tried getting into Atlantis but didn't like it from the start. Great idea, but... meh. I caught some good episodes later on, but it wasn't enough to entice me into regular watching.

Is SGU where a bunch of people are on board a huge spaceship of unknown technology on a course of unknown destination? I saw the pilot and it looked pretty intriguing, but lost track of it afterward. I guess it didn't fare very well, looking at the comments.

I'd probably have to go with season 4 of SG1 as my favorite overall.

As to SGU, I don't dislike it because it isn't SG1 or SGA. When it was announced that SGU would be a darker and more serialized show I was, and still am, all for it. The problems are that the show is slow, literally dark, the characters boring, the sidetrips back to Earth add nothing and make the show even slower, drama is manufactured between the Destiny crew just for the sake of being drama instead of emerging organically from the story or characters. And finally, nothing ever happens. Pilot episode...we need to find food, water and gain control of the ship...20 some episodes later...we need to find food, water and gain control of the ship.

So why am I watching it? Because it is the only spaceship show left on TV and a sense of loyalty to the franchise.

If you have Netflix, all SG-1 episodes are available through the instant streaming service. Alternatively, Hulu will have all episodes online through at least January. SG-1 is worth watching.

Season one, however, stumbles around a lot. For that season, I'd recommend "Children of the Gods" (the pilot), "The Enemy Within," "Cold Lazarus" (for O'Neill characterization purposes), "The Nox," "Thor's Hammer," "The Torment of Tantalus," "Bloodlines," "Hathor,' "Singularity," "Cor-Ai," "Engima," "Solitudes," "Tin Man," "There But for the Grace of God," "Politics" (clip-show but it sets up an important recurring character), and the season finale "Within the Serpent's Grasp."

From there, you're usually fairly safe that you'll get at least a decent episode in the subsequent seasons. Season one had some of the lowest episodes of the series. I think most fans feel that the show had started slipping by season six, though I'll let someone who has been with the franchise longer than me clarify, correct, or add to that. Richard Dean Anderson left the series at the end of season eight (though he had been less visible already in seasons seven and especially in eight), with Ben Browder (Farscape's John Crichton) taking over as commander of SG-1. Seasons nine and ten are sort of a "The Next Generation"-esque take on SG-1 but I still enjoyed both seasons for the most part.
