Worst thing about getting old?

OK, maybe the title is a bit over the top.

The other 'old' threads made me do this :p

At nothing but (almost) 46 some of you might not even consider me old enough to talk like that -but still I have noticed a few things that actually make me feel ancient.

Things like loud music having deteriorated to only having the 'loud' part as a positive, TV being full of attention whoring wannabes without any redeeming qualities whatsoever, clothing being even more ridiculous than it was in the seventies, kids being without parental control and warnings for stupid people on every single item you buy; "WARNING: stovetop might be warm when in use"

But on a personal note: I HATE :klingon: needing glasses to read the small print!

What's the worst thing about growing up you've experienced?

First being referred to as an "older guy". I just turned 42 for cripes sake!

I was on the iPhone Grindr app (a GPS-based chat/cruising app for men) at a bar recently. Some 20-something saw that I was near him, chatted me up and asked if I was at the bar where I was indeed located. I said so, and he said great I'm almost there, see you soon. I saw him walk in and as he stood next to me ordering a drink, I said hi and introduced myself. He shook my hand and said hi, then kind of disappeared with his friends.

About 20 minutes later, I got a message from him saying, "Sorry, my friends don't know I'm into older guys." :wtf:

I told my friend the bartender that I had just reached a watershed moment in my life (my first "older guy" reference). He asked who said that and I showed him the guy's pic. He said, "Oh, him? He's an ass! And a boring lay." :guffaw:

"You are only as old as the women you feel...lately I've been feelin' about 24."

or

"You are only as old as you feel...I feel like royal crap."

I noticed that in my mid-20s.

Well, not a general getting older symptom, but one that I have. I pass out/faint multiple times a week.

That's not a symptom of getting old, that's a symptom of a hormonal or neurological problem that should be checked out by a doctor.

I guess I just hate the annual invasion of my privacy.

Other than that, tech has improved so much in the last 50 years that I like life more now. 40 years ago the only way to hear a live opera from the Met was on a cheezy AM radio. Now we get 3 a week in stereo and two or three a year in high def on movie screens. If this is getting older, please keep it up! whoo!

^ I love that you're into classical music and opera. Me too. :techman:

And i love your "new" avatar!

There's an awful lot of things i hate about getting older. Worst for me is the aches and pains i never had when i was younger. They suck.

The change to the avatar was my wife's idea. She looked at Grace Lee Whitney and said, "She should have blue hair, and Kirk should be saying 'doh!'" I immediately realized she was absolutely right.

Yeah, I know, trekkiedane. I went to a naturopath this time and he never mentioned it, but I am feeling guilty. Guess I should go back... nah!

There are a few drawbacks to getting older. Watching other people get old, develop failing health and ultimately die is the worst. Knowing that I have less life ahead than I used to isn't great either.

Other than that, getting older means that I have more experience, more knowledge and have accomplished more; so getting older is positive in that respect. Luckily, I'm still very young at heart and am still able to enjoy all the things I've always enjoyed.

Of course, I'm repulsed by the current Dark Age we live in, but that's not about getting older, that's about standards. And we have to have a rebellious generation come along to turn things around sooner or later....

I think the worst thing about growing old is osteoarthritis though I had the first symptoms of it in my early 30s (when I was by no means old). However I now have it in my knees, ankles, one hip, one shoulder and both thumbs :(

My mother didn't develop arthritis until she was in her 70s well after I (and my sister) did.

I'm not sure which of these is worse:

- seeing the general population seeming to get younger on average,

- Having fewer people around who know what the hell you're talking about when discussing the past.

Me too. I have it in my thumbs, knees and hips. I've already had surgery on one hand and omg...what a difference it made. BUT it is EXTREMELY painful recovering from the surgery. I haven't hit the year mark yet....and he said by one year it will be even better than it is now. I'm not in enough pain yet to do the right hand.

If you are in really bad pain in the hands/thumbs and you have good health insurance (not sure what they have where you are), then i do recommend the surgery. It's called Basal Joint Replacement...it really made a big difference for me. I couldn't even turn a page before. However, do be prepared for PAIN while you recover. The upside was, i got lots and lots of pain meds to help with that!
