Worst ensign in Starfleet in "Man of the People!"

Jayson1

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I'm watching this episode right now and I just saw the scene were we first see Troi looking old and she moves out in the corridor begging the evil Ambassador guy to take her with him to the planet and she is screaming basically and while this happens some random guy walks by and barely looks and keeps on walking.
Maybe it's me but if I saw Troi looking old when she isn't and she is acting crazy I wouldn't treat the moment as another day at the office. You would think he would call sickbay or the bridge or someone The guy who sleeps with Troi also feels kind of off. I would think someone would hesitate in having sex with a senior officer in what amounts to a one night stand. Especially if it feels like the moment is out of character for her.

There are multiple examples of this throughout the series. You'll see bad conversations or odd behavior happening in the corridors of the Enterprise and whole groups of no name starfleet officers will casually stroll by like nothing is happening. Can't think of any specific episodes off the top of my head but I remember this happening in several episodes.

I'll add this to the "unrealistic hallway behavior list", along with why the hell people are simply moving at a walking pace through the halls on their way to save the ship before times runs out & they all die. That one gets me too. RUN GEORDI! RUN!

It's not just TNG. I remember a scene where Doctor Phlox was casually strolling along, taking his time to give medical assistance to someone who had a plasma conduit (or something) blow up in his face and was suffering from 3rd degree burns or whatever.

Iwas in the Army (I know, Starfleet isn't a military organization)
But if I saw a senior officer screaming at a man like that, I think I'd just have to act like it was just another day at the office too.
I think you: 1. Wouldn't want to end up receiving her wraith yourself or 2. End up sticking your nose into their sexual issues.

I wasn't an officer, but fun life in the barracks, you saw stuff like this happen a lot. You just Carried on with your day. unless it was your friend or someone you know pretty well.

And as for some guy having sex with her as a one night stand, .
I know, Starfleet Is Not A Military Organization......
Even on a small installation there are little groups that everyone seems to be with, the guy might only barely or not at all know her, and most likely would not know her character. Like if he always hangs out with the other stellar cartographers.
He probably thought "now I know why the ship is just flying among and then we get 'surprised ' and knocked sideways, those higher ups on the bridge are having way more fun than it seems"

Honestly, I think it's the advanced aging thing that should stop passersby in their tracks more than a public spat.

It also stretches believability to assume any crew member on that ship might not know her. She's the ship's chief counselor, & she is apparently responsible for conducting crew evaluations with the 1st officer. There'd be no escaping having met her. In all honesty, I'd actually have been highly suspicious if I were the one night stand ensign. That's not some normal behavior from one of the 7 most notable people aboard. I'm not saying I'd turn her down, but I'd be suspicious. lol

As bad as the ensigns were at least they can say they didn't look as bad as Worf did down on the planet. Picard barely finishes his words to Worf about arresting the Ambasador and 2 security guards get the drop on him without anything close to a fight. I can't help but laugh everytime I see that scene. Worf doesn't even look angry because he just casually hands his phaser over to them.

With over 1,000 people on that ship, I would think some crewmen might just not have ever met or seen Troi. She's either on the bridge, in her office, in her quarters or in 10-forward.
And even if this random person had ever seen Troi (maybe once?), would he recognize her in that aged state?

You would still think he might have reacted to this lover's quarrel in the corridor in some manner

This hits on the bigger question about Deanna. Does she counsel all the ship's Starfleet personnel or not? Since she is shown as an integral part of crew evaluations, I'm inclined to think she does sit down with all of them on occasion.

Honestly, 1000 people is a manageable number. It's a large high school class, & in reality, that 1000 isn't the crew tally. It represents all the lives aboard. I imagine the actual crew complement to be much less, maybe by a few hundred even

Another reason I'm not fond of this episode. One of Worf's lowest points IMHO. It was almost a gag the way it went down, a veritable "D'oh!" Moment

As above stated by Ar-Pharazon maybe the person didn't even recognize her in her aged state.
He may have thought that her yelling at him was normal for whatever species he was supposed to be. And he didn't take s good look at her because she was acting a tad crazy.

I think he just wanted to get back to his quarters kick off his shoes and play video games, not get involved with some lovers quarrel that might turn out to just be foreplay

I have to agree here.
I watched that scene a lot of times and I can't understand the actions of that ensign. I would have contacted sickbay immediately, at least when I saw how Troi looked.

The same for the guy who had a relationship with Troi. If I had been a junior officer or crewmember, I would have been very careful with hitting on Troi, otherwise I would have had nightmares about ending up like some casualty on some away mission with Riker in charge.

Otherwise I like the episode. It's a bit creepy and Ambassador alkar is really a creepy character.

I really like Troi but sometimes I was annoyed by her poor taste in men. First the slimy Devinion Ral and then the both slimy and creepy Ambassador Alkar.

I just watched the scene. I'd give the guy an pass. Deanna may not have sat with everyone for evaluations. The guy also might have com aboard after the most recent round of evaluations.

As for his lack of concern, how many times have we walked past an odd and dramatic conversations between a couple and moved on?

Yeah, I give stuff like that a pass all the time. You just have to assume for some reason he doesn't know her well enough to know how different she looks in that scene. It's mighty thin, & I'd expect from what I've seen overall, that she's met everyone, because that's kind of her job, but whatchya gonna do? lol

It's not just TNG. I remember a scene where Doctor Phlox was casually strolling along, taking his time to give medical assistance to someone who had a plasma conduit (or something) blow up in his face and was suffering from 3rd degree burns or whatever.
That I can accept. Walk and get there safely in 10 mins, versus run and get there in six if it works, or trip and not get there at all if you're unlucky? Fast but safe would be the right call.

Many times!

I have to give you a point here. A junior officer might just find it a bit unpleasant and weird when this woman who's supposed to be the ship's counselor acts and looks the way she did. Therefore he would just walk away, pretending that he hadn't noticed it. A human reaction, I guess.

Even if we accept that this guy might walk away wouldn't we expect that once he was out of range he might have called sickbay. Also we are talking about a starfleet officer so I think their is a idea that they for the most part would handle this kind if situation better than us modern day humans.
Jason

Maybe this was a frequent and well known behavior on Troi's part?
I kind of doubt that. #1, it would be a bit off for the ship's counselor to handle her relations that way. It kind of undermines the position a bit. #2, If her mother is any example to go by, she's actually rather conservative acting, as Betazoids go. #3 Whenever her & Bev get to chatting about one of their alien trysts of the week, it always comes off as though neither of them get much action. lol, & #4, psychoanalytically speaking, the whole chocoholic thing reads as sublimation in my book. hahaha :guffaw:

I can't remember the exact episode of TNG but there was one where Worf, Crusher, and a security team were responding to an emergency call from one of the cargo bays and as they approach the doors you see them casually strolling as if they are taking a relaxed walk.
