World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

I especially got a kick out of a woman, who when asked what people should do if they don't like the horn: "Go home!"

I've also heard a woman who said that was to annoy the non-african teams.

And on another note: Are the English seriously telling us their goalie was distracted by a breakup with his Canadian underwear model? Really? Seriously? God, it has to be the worst excuse ever.

If France lose, it's because of Ribéry's affair with an underage prostitute

True. I think for further growth for New Zealand (and other Oceania nations), they should be part of Asia. It has helped the sport in a country where the FFA have to compete with 3 other codes of football (and I'm someone who doesn't care about our A-League here)

Hm, if New Zealand switched into the AFC also, I'm not sure giving a qualifying spot to Oceania (even just for a play-off against an Asian team) makes sense anymore though. I mean, New Zealand dominated the Oceania qualification and they themselves are possibly the weakest of the 32 teams in South Africa.

True, NZ did dominate Oceania, but when you have opposition like Fiji and other Pacific Islands, you would expect New Zealand (and Australia when we were there) to dominate. If it ever happened, then all other Oceania countries would have to compete in AFC also. It was joked about tonight on TV here. New Zealand would be ranked in the top 10 in Asia.

Then there would be one free spot avaiable for either Europe or South America, if FIFA went kept at 4 spots for the AFC in the WC.

Any old excuse.

Yesterday Green explained what happened and said that it had come off of his thumb. Here's an idea Rob, get the rest of your body behind the fcuking ball and then it wouldn't matter!

Twat. :scream:

You wrote fuck as fcuk in two posts. You do realize you can say fucking as much as you want without it censoring you, correct?

While these drawn opening games have been a little frustrating, it at least means the last group games will have more importance. Hopefully performances will have picked up by then as well.

People will say that this is the most boring game ever, but I think it's absolutely fascinating. I can't remember ever seeing a team play quite like North Korea does today, they are sort of playing a 5-3-2 where the "2" are defensive midfielders, but on the other hand they are quicker at turning defense into going on the offensive than fucking Brazil, who's doing absolutely nothing. Very, very strange.

North Korea's players definitely aren't the sort to resort to diving. And I agree with the fascinating thing.

They also play extremely fair. I think there has been exactly one foul in the entire first half. That's very unusual for a team that is such an underdog and is only counting on their defense.

Quite. Seems good natured between the players too.

Solid defensive performance so far - though I'd say their concentration was dropping for the last 10 minutes - and entirely watchable.

I'm remembering an article about NK on zonalmarking that I read before the WC. The major point there was that NK is comparatively poor at defending set pieces.

Could be a reason.

Edit: North Korea: A better side than you might expect

This is good stuff from the underdogs. Destined to end badly, but... Brazil need to up the tempo to break down the DPR. Robinho looks decent for the first time in a long time mind you.

I agree with this 100%. I saw a replay in the first half of a Brazilian player and a North Korean player help each other up after a scrum. That's so much better to see than the diving and acting of so many other teams.

I am also glad to see Portugal only get a draw and I hope they're out earlier. I don't like Cristiano Ronaldo for the same reason I'm not a fan of Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin when it comes to hockey: Money having gone to their heads. Ronaldo is a player who is all about himself, like David Beckham. I'd rather have a team player than a prima donna.

I also like that Brazil has had to work for their goals and that it's not a slaughter like so many predicted.
