World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Oh, this is absolutely perfect.

Nah, going to be on the opposite side of this match. I love supporting the lesser South Americans.

PARAGUAY! PARAGUAY! PARAGUAY!
May the best team win! :techman:

Unless the Italians stage a major comeback, I don't think this is a good night for you iguana.

Don't worry mate, there's still New Zealand and Slovakia to beat. :p

Of course, I could have just spoken too soon...

Well, it wasn't a win for Paraguay, but the Italians really woke up in the second half, and they deserved that draw.

Phew, that was one of the best matches I've seen this tournament, especially since I managed to get myself really caring about which side won.

There we go, at least the Italians don't walk away like France did in '02. That would be embarassing, to defend your title like the French did. :p

Phew, that was close. I squirmed a lot. :alienblush:

Nice game, tho. Italy built a lot of opportunity, but wasn't able to finalize them. Paraguay played fiercely. In the end it was a fair result: we played better football, but Paraguay was more pragmatic.

With the absence of Turkey the Italians are clearly the World Champions of singing of the national antham. ;)
Yeah, it's a point of honor to us. You get a lot of criticism at home if you doing sing Fratelli d'Italia loud enough.

Netherlands and Denmark was typical of the quality we've seen so far. Japan v Cameroon was soporific. Had me falling asleep at my desk.
I knew the Japan - Cameroon game was a good time to go bed.

In terms of second teams, I can't see myself go for the English. Probably French or Spanish teams. But I'll support my Kiwi friends through their group stage matches.

Wow, color me surprised. The England/USA match was viewed by more than 17 million Americans, more than each of the first four games of the NBA Finals! :wtf: It was also watched by more Americans than every single game of the recent Stanley Cup Fiinals, and apparently overall ratings are double what they were during the 2006 World Cup.

While I'm sure a lot of people tuned in simply because of the hype, and though I doubt the Americans' next game (Friday at 9:30 AM) will generate ratings nearly as a high, I still think that's very encouraging news for soccer in the United States. :techman:

The problem with the World Cup is the group stages especially in the 1st round of matches are a little boring. I always prefer Euro championships because I feel the quality of football is better.

Euro 2008 was amazing imo compared to the 2006 world cup.

Euro2008 is the best Euro tournamant I've seen.

Oddly, USA '94 was the best World Cup (terrible final though).

It was pretty good, but I hated the fact that it rained on 90% of the matches.

Every Euro is good, though. Euro 2000 (Belgium & Netherlands) was pretty damn spectacular all the way through, especially the finale.

Oh I don't know, despite the fat little fcuker I still have very fond memories of Mexico '86. A fantastic tournament. Great goals, loads of goals, and some classic matches! (Arg Vs Eng, Fra vs Bra, Fra vs Ger, Den vs Uru, Den vs Spa)

Personally, I think generally that group stages are relatively poor, as the emphasis is very much on "let's just make sure we qualify".

Well, the concentration of football quality is still higher in Europe and South America than elsewhere in the world and the qualification for the World Cup is somewhat political (I'm not saying that's bad though). If they invited the 32 best teams, without regards to geography, there should probably be even fewer teams from Asia, Africa and North America.

In the Euro, there are no such considerations necessary, so clearly the level of play is stronger overall. But if you're just going for that than club football is superior to even that. The fun thing about the World Cup is the cosmopolitanism and all that imo.

Given the ease of mobility in this day and age, they should just make qualification global rather than regional.

On the plus side, you'd get the 31 (+host) most deserving nations getting to the finals.

On the negative side, that would leave you with a European/South American cup.....

Congratulations, New Zealand.

That was not very smart of Slovakia, but whatever. Neither of the two teams will get into the next round, but it's a great success for New Zealand to take a point away from this World Cup. :)

I thought England's group was relatively weak compared to some of the others but this group is weaker still.

Can't see anything other than Italy and Paraguay going through.

True. I think for further growth for New Zealand (and other Oceania nations), they should be part of Asia. It has helped the sport in a country where the FFA have to compete with 3 other codes of football (and I'm someone who doesn't care about our A-League here)

Hm, if New Zealand switched into the AFC also, I'm not sure giving a qualifying spot to Oceania (even just for a play-off against an Asian team) makes sense anymore though. I mean, New Zealand dominated the Oceania qualification and they themselves are possibly the weakest of the 32 teams in South Africa.

I was watching TSN for the highlights and they ran a piece on the vuvuvelza, the damned annoying horn.

I especially got a kick out of a woman, who when asked what people should do if they don't like the horn: "Go home!" For a tournament that is supposed to promote all cultures no matter what's going on, even North Korea is here, the supporters of this horn, like this woman, are forcing people to be tortured by the sound that's equivalent to an air horn siren in terms of decibels.

I'm all for multiculturalism, but not when it tramples on the health of other spectators. If they want to blow a horn, only let them do it after a goal, not for all 90 minutes of a game. Ban the vuvuzela!

And on another note: Are the English seriously telling us their goalie was distracted by a breakup with his Canadian underwear model? Really? Seriously? God, it has to be the worst excuse ever.

Any old excuse.

Yesterday Green explained what happened and said that it had come off of his thumb. Here's an idea Rob, get the rest of your body behind the fcuking ball and then it wouldn't matter!

Twat. :scream:
