World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

The only thing that's good about Germany beating Argentina is, that you'll be crushed even more when you get your asses kicked in the semi-finals now that you have a little bit of hope again.

That was totally uncalled for coming from someone whose team never even qualifies for anything. Ever. What's the point in wishing your neighbours to "get their arses kicked"?

Epic fail.

^ I'm in a similar position, but I simply hope England never win it because it would be unbearable. We haven't stopped hearing about the one 44 years ago yet!

Well, that's inventive at least.
How was he found out?

It was all captured on video, him receiving the capsule on the sidelines, then putting it in his mouth and suddenly blood coming out of it if I remember correctly.

Not to mention the fact he was caught on camera winking at his coachto signify it had worked. And the whole point was so they could take him off the pitch and replace him with a kicker, who then kicked the points that won the team the game.

Beyond a disgrace.

I don't really care about the Austrian national football team, in fact even if you think I'm crazy because of that, I want Germany to fail way more than I want Austria to be successful. I'm more a club-football kind of guy, especially since I'm politically disinclined towards nationalism anyway.
What`s the point? I don't know. What's the point of being happy if a team you support wins? Is being happy when a team you don't like loses so much different? ;)

It's not crazy, I just think it's sad. The only teams I really don't like are the Argentinians and the Brazilians.... but that's because those players have a history of being full of themselves, and not due to their nationality.

I think there is a huge difference between rejoicing in someone's triumph or in their defeat. One is positive, the other one isn't.

So I don't know you and far be it from me to pass judgment, but jeez, what's with Austrians and their hatred toward Germany? I've been living in Germany for a few years now and love it. It's a great country.

And the Nationalelf have been playing awesome football. They outplayed and outclassed England and Argentina and they have a good chance of winning tomorrow. I sincerely doubt anyone will get a beating. It will be a tight match. And I hope both teams will do their best to win.

However, if wishing someone else ill makes you happy....it's your life. *shrugs* No offense meant whatsoever.

well the plus side to Germany winning it is that we can say we were knocked out by the best team I guess...

I'm kinda routing for Holland though...

Um, yeah, and German footballers are not fucking full of themselves?

If you say so, feels the same to me.

I don't hate Germany, I don't even hate German football (I watch the Bundesliga pretty regularly), just the national team. And I'm annoyed by its supporters.

Any Spanish victory will be good enough for me. A victory in a penalty shootout would be fun.

Alright.

Well you yon't find any Dutch supporters in Germany.... but I was very happy when they sent the Selecao home. I'm hoping for a Holland vs Germany final.... but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I want them to win because they're the best, not because the ref screwed up.

The Spanish team only got this far because Villa got lucky 3 times. Two of his goals should not have counted- one was clearly and extremely offside, and the other was more like a volleyball move than football. Also, he slapped that other guy.

Remember Thorsten Frings after the quarter finals against Argentina in 2006? It's sort of unfair.

Still, should they turn out to be the better team (Spain), like they were in 2008, I'll live.

Austria: No, they're not full of themselves. What the hell? Have you actually seen the interviews after the England and Argentina matches? No, you're one of those people who want to be a rebel by being negative toward others and what they love (excuse everyone else for celebrating their teams), so unless you start reasoning like a big boy, I'm off. Bye. Have a good life.

I always wonder though whether they might be a lot less obsessed with 1966 if they managed to win the World Cup again. It's almost become a tragedy by now: will they ever win it again?

I personally hope they do (and soon, please) but it doesn't look very likely in the near future. You do get surprising amounts of compassion, though, as a fan. In the last few days I've met several people I hadn't seen since before the England vs. Germany game and they were all very caring towards me because of England's mediocre performance this year.

Now, since 2006 I'm also a fan of Germany (though more of a silent one, I have 3 England themed shirts and a British flag but I would never don the German colours) and the difference couldn't be greater.
With one team, it's always drama and great, tragic defeats. With the other it's a disappointment if you don't reach the semis.

And by the way: There are fans of the Dutch national team in Germany, I've seen flags and shirts (though they might have been Dutch). Spain is pretty popular and has been for years. There might be divides within families tomorrow. :)

The problem with that though is that we have won it, and if we never ever win it again, you'll never hear the last of '66. ;)

Personally, I hope that Germany go on to win the tournament now. Their display against us was superb, their display against Argentina was even better. People can say that we were poor, or that the Argies didn't turn up, but both were largely due to the Germans making both teams look so pedestrian.

I don't think they'll have too many problems with Spain, who've been underwhelming in the tournament, or Holland who've probably had their big game already against Brazil.

Now Germany beat Argentina, I can now switch my opinion to wanting them out of the World Cup like a good English fan :p

Spain/Holland final please.

How dare you be so negative?!? I just learned you're not allowed to root for a team to get knocked out!! And anyway, can't you see how lovable the German team is - Schweini and Klosi and Jogi and Lahmi and Poldi etc.

You know damn well that wasn't the problem with your earlier comment.

I'd love to see Holland win this, especially after being the perennial "team that has talent, but goes nowhere" for at least my lifetime.

Yep, it must be very frustrating to only ever become vice-champions. But first, they have to beat Uruguay today. After Brazil, that shouldn't be a problem, I guess, but somehow I can't really measure the Dutch team.

Looking forward to that game. Should be great. :)
