World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Yep, a handball. It wasn't quite clear from the TV perspective whether it was intentional or not, but the referee saw it as intentional, obviously.

Right. (I confess that it looked pretty incidental to me.) Anyway, that's one of Germany's best players out for the semi-finals, though admittedly they were so dominant today, and so many players were involved in the dominance, that it's hard not to see them as the favorite against Spain (which I doubt would have been a common perception when the tournament started).

I agree. After today I'd be very disappointed if we lose against Spain on Wednesday. I'd never have expected that at the start of the World Cup.

That video is from the press conference after the game against Argentina (which Germany lost 0-1) in March where Müller debuted for the national team. (For those who don't understand German.)

Tim Cahill's red in the Australia/Ghana match for example. I seem to remember that appearing to have little intent.
It was actually Harry Kewell, and short of making his arm instantaneously disappear there was very little he could have done to avoid it. Something as blatant and cynical as Suarez's effort? Easily avoidable. Then again, the Maradona thing in 86 and the Henry thing against Ireland seem to suggest that sometimes, handball in football is no big deal. Or something.

Speaking of Maradona, good riddance to Argentina and hopefully good riddance to him as well.

How can you not love Maradona at least? ;)

I enjoyed watching him weep, to put it dramatically. Man, they got one hell of a beating and they deserved it. The Germans were brilliant, it was a joy to watch them play, and I have always loved Miro Klose.... I'm so happy for him!

Now it's Unsere Jungs against Villa, Casillas, Ramos, Pique, Torres etc. It'll be awesome.

:techman:

The only thing that's good about Germany beating Argentina is, that you'll be crushed even more when you get your asses kicked in the semi-finals now that you have a little bit of hope again.

What are you trying to accomplish with comments like this? Has the thread been too civil for you so far?

This thread has been far too civil, you know. All we football fans are supposed to be angry drunken louts you break things. Rugby fans told me, so it must be true.

Good old rugby fans having a go after the various things that happened in the World Cup happened. Always rely on them to be sanctimonious and preach their rules as gospel. I have one thing to say to them all: Fake blood >>>>> anything any footballer has ever done by way of 'cheating'.

I don't know about England but over here, the athmosphere in rugby is better than the atmosphere in football because the French culture of rugby came from the south west of the country and those people know what having a pleasant life is :)

Well...

Hooliganism still exists, though it's now moved to the lower leagues with lower security levels. And occasionally there are still deaths, though far away from the stadium.
Today I read this horrible story (in German only, sorry) about a German shooting two Italians in the head after an argument about football. (Of course, it happened in Germany's homicide capital Hanover.)
And the last serious outburst of violence during a World Cup wasn't so long ago (1998 in Lens).
But, considering the anxiety before this World Cup, it has been remarkably peaceful so far. Let's hope it stays that way.

I'm not sure I want to know th story behind this...

And Carrie, what is that in your avatar?

A rugby player bit on a capsule filled with some red liquid he had hidden in his mouth to fake having been fouled by another player and got him sent off or something like that. It was a pretty big story when it came out (otherwise I wouldn't noticed it) but I can't be arsed looking for a link right now.
