World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

There are now promos for football games? What has the world come to? ;)
Let's hope we won't look as clueless as the Paraguayan defense in that video tomorrow. :)

So, no promo vid for Holland vs. Uruguay?

Suarez is a good player, but so is Forlan. I still don't expect them to beat Holland, two star strikers or one star striker, unless of course, they cheat again... :shifty:

I don't put all the blame or the label of cheater on Suarez.

He made a last ditch effort to give his team a chance. Maybe I don't understand football and its intricacies, but that ball was going in if Suarez doesn't swat it down. The penalty kick is a 50-50 shot and it was the Ghana player's fault for missing it.

Well, apparently, Suarez did boast about it afterwards and that's very unsportsmanlike.

What a goal!

That's speculation, maybe the ball would've gone in, maybe not. I still think the hands was unneccesary.

The chance for a penalty shot to go in is not 50-50 though, I think the average rate of success is ~90%; maybe a little less in an especially high-pressure situation like in this quarterfinal, but probably not much less.

It's closer to 70% actually.

Really? I read an article about a statistical evaluation of that once (I think it was in Spiegel), but maybe I remembered it incorrectly.

Well, all I have is wikipedia:

For instance, of 78 penalty kicks taken during FA Premier League 2005-06 season, 57 resulted in a goal, meaning almost 30% of the penalties were unsuccessful.

[...]

A German professor who has been studying penalty statistics in the German Bundesliga for 16 years found that 76% of all the penalties during those 16 years went in, and 99% of the shots in the higher half of the goal went in
And a Portuguese guy in another forum quoted something like 65% for their league.
