We were informed at the "Star Trek" office that they were filming on stage 16, which was the "Planet stage", but they had extra room to put other sets, which included many Klingon prison sets for "Star Trek 6". When we arrived there, there was no red light showing, so we knew that they were not filming, but we opened the door slowly and silently, just in case. We went in, and they were still adjusting the lights. Majel and Marina were sitting off the set, wearing makeup bathrobes, and Majel yelled at Edward, wondering where the hell he had been, etc. I stayed back in the shadows, not wanting to get hit by shrapnel, or come into her firing range.Ed was told that there would still be about an hour or more before they started filming, so we took off to play around on the other TREK sets. It was very strange, because both stages 8 and 9 were totally empty, so we agreed that the rest of the cast must be doing some location filming, or simply had a day off!

After about 90 minutes, we went back into stage 16, careful to not slam the door or anything, and we were standing in the shadows, watching the crew behind the cameras. The odd thing that I noticed was that some of the crew, MOST of the crew were holding one hand up, as if blocking out the sun! It was at this point that I started to look back towards Edward, and he was just standing there, with a shocked look on his face. I followed his stare, and that's when I noticed that both Majel and Marina were totally NUDE! Now, I have heard stories where it's been told at conventions that they were NOT nude, kind of like the stories about the "Pyscho" shower scene, where she WAS nude also. But take it from me, there was not a stitch of anything. I had already seen Marina full frontal in "The Wicked Lady" so that was nothing new, but MAJEL???

I think I'll need to come back and see/read the rest of this fascinating thread later. Right now, I can't get rid of the idea of seeing Marina Sirtis nude in person back then.

This story sounds dubious, since there was no reason for Marina or Majel to be fully naked; they were being filmed specifically in medium close up. The only shots requiring partial nudity would be the reverse angle where body doubles were likely substituted.

Of course, one way of confirming or disproving this claim is to ask someone at CBS Digital who has seen the 35mm full camera aperture shots of these scenes. It may be possible to see that Marina and Majel are in fact wearing something below the TV frame as I suspect they are.

In Cost of Living, there's too much frame (SD and HD, I believe), and you can tell that Majel is wearing a flesh-colored top in that one.

Also, I can't imagine why the Rura Penthe sets would be up one full year before filming. Ménage à Troi aired in May of 1990, and photography didn't start on Star Trek VI until April 1991.

He didn't explicitly say that the Rura Penthe sets were standing at that point, only that they had been built on that stage (and my guess is they used the existing faux landscape for much of it).

Mr. Stone was paid for his work. So an artist should take something you paid for if they don't like how you're treating it?

If it's going into the trash - absolutely. I don't think any self-respecting artist in any field would be OK with that. I'm just a cook, and I know what I make will eventually turn into poop anyway, but throwing away a dish I've worked hard on hurts a little inside. I can only imagine what it feels like if you're someone that makes things that are more permanent.

Weren't most if not all of the rure penthe interior sets actually shot out of doors at night at Vasquez Rocks? I remember AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER had a still of the setup, and other mags talking about the rough cold night shoots.

You'd figure they wouldn't make that demand of the grand dame of trek though, unless she was an exhibitionist and Marina just wanted to make a show of solidarity.

Possibly. I am assuming the soundstage bound scenes were like the bunkroom, the elevator, and the stuff out on the snow.

In that episode, you see his body from head to toe, except for Picard's head blocking Q's package. The Trois were only shown from the shoulders up from the front, and from the lower back up from the back, so there was no need to be nude from head to toe.

As anyone whose worked on a film set knows, the obvious answer to the preserving actor modesty in the Q-naked-but-for-Picard's-head-shot is low-tack gaffer tape and a piece of opalescent diffusion.

I remember in the MAKING OF SPACE 1999 book that Schell talked about doing a movie where she just had orchid-looking pasties glued over her nipples and the director came by and ripped them off her and it was like the most painful thing she ever experienced.

To clear up a point! The only set from ST6 that I saw on stage 16 was the prison set, where Kirk and McCoy had the beds, and the one alien fought with Kirk.

Marina had no problem with film nudity, as was seen in "The Wicked Lady" where she was full frontal, and I think that in one of the books, Gene was quoted as "insinuating" that Majel was a "Naturalist" or something like that.

But the bottom line is that what I saw is what I SAW! Anyone who wants to dispute that is basically calling me a LIAR! It's not like the "Black Hole" issue, I was THERE, I SAW the shoot, and Ed was very upset over that, but never mentioned it to Majel, one way or the other.

It's like saying that I never saw the Eifel tower in Paris, that it was some sort of a CGI or Photoshop trick! I saw what I saw, end of discussion.

Don't banter it around and cause problems on the board, if you have actual and factual PROOF that I'm lying, then offer it up here!

Indeed. That no covering material or at the least "pasties" were used is difficult to believe. I seem to recall a story from the DS9 Companion, where some fragrant oil used in Kira's bath in a mirror universe episode counteracted the adhesive of the "pasties" she wore that day and they fell right off.

Larry Nemecek's book, The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion has been in print for over 20 years. In it, he states that stand-ins were used. I don't have it right in front of me at the moment, but it is in that section for "Menage a Troi."

I know Larry and he's no liar or thief. I've also read that book, (an actual, published book by Pocket Books) many times.

Given their reputability, and especially given the questionable veracity of some of your claims, I'll take their word for it.

Why would a low-level special effects employee be on the set of this type of scene?
