Wogan's (Im)Perfect Recall...

Zulu Romeo

World Famous Starship Captain

Even producers have their off-days...

I was watching today's "Wogan's Perfect Recall" (Thursday 9th July 2009) a general knowledge quiz show where contestants have to remember 16 answers and use them to answer sets of questions - and I noticed something quite odd, so much so that I took a photo:

I ended up watching the show again on Channel 4's On Demand service online, and took this screenshot, to prove I wasn't going mad:

Notice anything odd?

There is a story behind it, apparently, which I found on this forum: http://www.b3ta.com/questions/onthebox/page12/

...

I must have been working late because the words NUT and SACK ended up together on the board in one show and stayed up on their own almost until the end of the round. It was only noticed on repeated viewings during the edit at which point it was too late to re-record.

It's a good thing I didn't realise the hilarious possibilities until my contract had finished else there may well have been one in every show.

...
It's a funny old world we live in...

I'm really surprised, the anonymous producer in the link above aside, no other blogger or forum on the whole web has picked up on this today.

I take it nutsack has the same meaning over there and people in the audience were just too polite to react?

It appears the board is a computer generated aid put on screen in post.

Yes, I know your joking, but I wont take that backhanded jab at British politeness, no sir. Not one bit.

Hence this strong worded reply in a rather polite manner. :P

If I recall correctly (see what I did there), the contestants cannot see the 20 answers available, and have to recall them from memory to answer the 20 questions in each round (the questions change in each round but the answers stay the same, so by remembering all 20 answers one stands a better chance of winning - it doesn't really work in practice, to be honest).

I'm not sure if this game show actually has a live studio audience as it always sounds as if the audience track is "canned" (no-one responds to Terry Wogan's quips).

I'm not even sure if Terry can see the quiz board, or if he just reads everything from his question cards, and the display board is added later via bluescreen. Maybe Wogan was being polite. ;)

According to the Producer's story from the above link, he didn't notice it until the editing process.
