Windows 7 Beta

I too tried to download with FireFox, should've known better :brickwall:.
Working OK now though.
Gonna install on what is now my 3rd HDD, a 500GB that used to be #2 before I got the 1.5TB. When I want W7, I'll change the
boot order, if necessary. I've only tried dual boot once before, and that was from the same #1 HDD.
Or will it see both OS' even if they're on different HDDs?

You gonna dual boot Vista with Win7? If so, yes, it'll see both OSs even though they're on different hard drives. You likely won't have to fiddle with a thing (if you were booting Linux and using GRUB, for example, you may have to do a little fiddling to show GRUB where the MBR is and to make sure it sees both).

But the Vista boot loader will recognize a new Win7 installation and prompt you on every boot for the OS you'd like to load.

Also, does the 32bit version still only recognize 4GB of RAM?

I can't get the iso file to load the install screen. I know the image burned because when I had windows up I tested it and the install screen came up. I have the cd/dvd burner set as the boot drive...can't figure it out.

Ok re-burned it..it loads, but there is a file missing that windows cannot find...wtf.

Again I don't get it..the file is there, I found it...still not loading.

Well, I've been running this thing full time on my box since around saturday afternoon, and I like it! I had XPSP2 on here before.

About the taskbar... I unpinned the shortcuts from it, and made up my normal desktop shortcuts like I always do. That way, only running programs appear the taskbar. :)

For what it's worth, I fix computers for a living. :)

As far as game performance, Fallout3 seems faster here than even on XP.

Oh, and PhotoshopCS3... It loads about twice as fast than on XP. :)

I currently have XPx64. Started off with XPx32 when I built the machine a year ago, but didn't realize the RAM limitation thing
(I had 8GB from the start).
I have since clean reinstalled the XPx64.
So I'll be dual booting with the XPx64 on C: and (hopefully) the W7 on X:.
I had been planning to put this 3rd HDD into an external enclosure, but haven't gotten around to it yet, it's still running off the mobo's IDE
with a converter to SATA. All 4 of the regular SATAs are taken.

Thanks.

So far so good. Installed & running. In fact, installation was way faster than XP ever was. I never used Vista, did it have the same updated look during install? I'm used to the blue DOS-like environment.

It wouldn't activate automatically, so I did it by phone.

I did get the driver for the MS mouse to work, but scrolling seems slow even at top speed setting.

It won't install the driver for my monitor, which isn't a huge thing. It seems to know what my video card is (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS), but won't update the driver automatically, also doesn't seem to want to let the NVIDIA site detect my hardware. The install CD for my audio card won't run under the OS (Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty). In fact the IE window for the NVIDIA thing is now stuck open and I'm going to restart.
Anybody have any luck with these things?

Additional: Back in XP for now. W7 was getting flaky, disk cleanup was going nowhere, IE kept locking up, "rate my computer" got an error message and wouldn't complete. I'll fiddle more later or tomorrow.

OK I am now officially on IE8 on Windows 7. Got it working obviously.

Yeah, I went with the 64bit.
I installed TuneUp Utilities, it runs OK except "No connection could be made to the Tune Up Defrag service" when attempting the de-frag part of the 1-step maintenance. I'm connected to the internet, which is usually the issue with this message.
Also, are we unable to move the programs pinned to the taskbar to the right side? I tried with the taskbar unlocked, it just rolls back over to the left side.

Edit: Just before leaving for work, I got the Vista driver for my sound card to install and it recognizes the card now. But all I could get for sound was static,

What is your sound card  A model from 1902? :p

Sound card drivers are as basic as they come - I can't think of any that shouldn't work out-of-box with Vista or 7.

We're talking Microsoft here ;) I've had speakers/sound cards generate static before on earlier versions of Windows.

Yeah, you'd think that... but clearly you haven't used any Creative product since Vista's launch. :p Actually, there were several sound card types, both integrated and not, that have had major issues with Vista... and all of it is on the heads of the manufacturers and their poor driver support.

Hardly all of it--it's also Microsoft's fault for changing the driver model.

As only certain companies had issues and many others had none... combined with Creative's continued insistence that their drivers work correctly when they didn't... and also combined with the fact that they tried to shut down modders that made the fixes for them... Creative is not absolved by the fact that there was a change to the driver model.

Mine also took some doing to get sound to work correctly. Of course I'm using on board sound, but still.

You can't blame Microsoft for updating their driver model unless updating an OS is inherently wrong. Besides Microsoft gave hardware manufacturers plenty of notice to get their drivers sorted out and most had no problem at all.

They're allowed to update the driver model; but as part of doing so, things are going to break, either by not having drivers, or by developers needing more time to develop drivers as good as "classic" ones. When this happens, it's not fair to lay blame entirely at the developer's feet; they didn't force the changes.

Yeah, Creative should probably have waited until their drivers were better quality before releasing. But if it's that or no drivers at all...?

They had plenty of time to update their drivers. It's not like as if Vista was a shocking surprise when it was released, Creative knew that MS had been working on it for five years. Beta 1 was released a full year and a half before Vista's launch, and Beta 2 was released 8 months in advance. They had plenty of time to get things in order so that their drivers were compatible with this new OS, but they just didn't try hard enough.

MS is by no means a perfect company, but it is not their fault that third parties released shoddy drivers for Vista.
