Windows 10....one year later....disscussion, thoughts.

I just use itunes (annoyances aside -- I have to replace a lot of my library since moving up to 10 and I have to save up for the pro version of Sharepod). I miss being able to use Windows Music Player, but VLC works ok for movies and what not.
Ugh, iTunes. I tried to like iTunes, but it's slow, resource hungry, and more complicated than it needs to be for what it is. For me, Windows Media Player is light, easy to use, rips my CDs quickly and tosses them right into the music folder, and if I have to use it to watch a video, it loads quickly and with a minimum of fuss.

Oddly I've never been able to get Windows Media Player to play nice with DVD movies. I instead have used things like Corel WinDVD and PowerDVD which is my default now for DVD and bluray movies.

Corel WinDVD seems very slow to respond to keyboard inputs too on my machine. I don't know why but it's the only media program that does that I have since abandoned it.

I used to use WinDVD, but Win10 AU seems to have broken it on my machine and reinstallation doesn't work. For DVD's I stick to VLC and for general listening to music, it's still Winamp.

I'm still looking at a decent solution for Blu though.

Yea I used to use WMP, but I ran into issues with music on it. But I agree about the slowness and resource hogness of itunes. And the fact that it keeps on corrupting songs. I fixed up some Queensryche songs due to it and I'm in the middle of fixing up some Madonna ones that they screwed up. And now due to a transfer, I have to add back in old ones from my ipod again. But itunes is itunes so I have to save up for a workaround. :brickwall: No big deal, but a headache nonetheless.

Edit: Just had my computer run into an error as it was shutting down. Did a bit of research and it looks like it's related to the latest update I got on my system (KB4013214 -- Windows 10 Creators Update Privacy Settings for x64-based Systems). Other people seem to have run into a similar problem with this damn thing as well.

Here's what showed up log wise:

Session "Microsoft.Windows.UniversalNotificationPlatform" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022 -- 4/22/2017

Session "Microsoft.Windows.UniversalNotificationPlatform" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035 -- 4/16/2017 (The same day that the new update that I mentioned above showed up)

There are other issues of it during this point in time, just mentioning the two above as examples.

Have you run into a similar issue with it?

I was very uneasy about Windows 10 in the beginning. I avoided it until the last possible moment (free upgrade expiration). Because I actually didn't mind Windows 8.1. I found it reliable. I created my own task bar toolbars to restore quick access to Programs. The tile mode was OK when doing relaxed browsing with the touch screen, but most of the time I was in the traditional desktop. Never got a BSOD.

Upgrading to Windows 10 was a nightmare, and then trying to go from initial RTM to the Anniversary Edition was even worse. For BOTH of my HP laptops. Microsoft had so many bugs in that installer. It would fail on things it should have figured out very early in the process (like using "D" drive for temp space, only to find it had insufficient space). I spent countless hours dealing with forums and Microsoft support. I finally got used to Windows 10 and I think it's actually a little better in the UI than 8.1, but... I don't like all the built-in spyware processes that Microsoft incorporated. Also, I've run into a number of BSOD instances with Windows 10 that I never experienced in 8.1. There is still much for Microsoft to do with Windows. This version should have come out about 10 years ago. We should be on a version now that gives advanced users full monitoring capability of all processes that are running, including vendor and where executed from. These "anonymous" svchost processes are unacceptable at this late stage.

I've heard nothing but great things about Linux Mint. And I'm going to set up my system for dual-boot pretty soon.

Spybot anti beacon also works.

As for Mint, I've ditched M$ somewhat more that half a year ago for Linux Mint 18.1 and I have no reasons to go back, I run it on 9 machines now and its been simple, fast, clean and easy, I use the Cinnamon desktop and its a DESKTOP environment not a halfway butchered travesty like on Windows...
I only have one game PC with 8.1 on it everything else I do on the Mint machine.

I love Mint, and wholeheartedly endorse its adoption. I wish I could switch to it, I really do, but I can't get several programs I need to work with it just yet. Once they do, I plan on making a permanent switch.

I like Windows 10 for the most part. There's a few niggles here and there but hey for some of us we like it.

I just turned on my laptop today as I hardly ever use it and found that it too like my phone has issues with the people app. It's a rather useless app anyway on a desktop or laptop. But anyway today this is what happens when I click on settings inside the app.

Same email address but showing the account signed in twice. Yet everywhere else on the same machine I'm only signed in once.

I finally got rid of the quick application thumbnails about two weeks ago, so my start menu is just a regular start menu. I am using Ubuntu as of about a week ago. Now I launch Ubuntu or use the Ubuntu launcher to pick between the two. I like that better. I've had the dickens of a time with the other windows 10 machine. For some reason the U.S.B installation doesn't work, so when I need to reinstall I am kind of going to be S.O.L. Technically the BIOS says I can launch from U.S.B - H.D.D... I tried Ubuntu on it no dice. I tried an ISO disk, I am praying the ISO disk was in error. It is single boot windows 10... probably for life.

Dammit Windows. Booted up my laptop this morning and the password box didn't show up. Luckily control, alt, delete worked, but I'm still concerned. Anyone else run into this issue lately?

yeah it was mentioned a page or two back

VLC is good for playing videos, but I like having a library for music.
Have you tried Foobar?

It's geared more for audiophiles, but with the right bit of tweaking, it's great for all-purpose music cataloging too.

It plays any file type you can throw at it and the decoders are as good as you're going to find without playing megabucks. It also has I/O bypass if you have an external DAC (both ASIO and WASAPI), if you care about that sort of thing.

The layout is is fairly bare bones, but there is a lot to customize but has all the stander visual aids, including both VU and peak meters. And peak meters are awesome.

The CD ripper is a breeze also supports accuraterip--thought I don't know how well it's up-kept seeing most of its intended audience use EAC or dbPoweramp anyway.

It does have a library feature, but it's really basic out of the box. But there are plenty of different plugins to change the functionality to be more like iTunes or Winamp or whatever you live. Though the basic function is good enough for me--it's basically just a glorified directory tree of your Music folder (or whatever folder you keep your library in).

There are also a lot of both pre and post-processing options that go beyond what you expect from a normal music player. (Again, since it's aimed towards audiophiles.) But even its Replay Gain implantation is the best I've seen, both in terms of simplicity and transparency.

Most importantly though, it has a tiny footprint. Like freakishly small. Even with a bunch of plugins going, it used very few resources. Though I don't use any plugins these days (I used to have a bunch.), without them, you can hardly tell it's on. It usually runs at less than 10MB and only uses about 2% of the CPU--even with several playlists loaded, the EQ going, and two or three visuals.

And I've had it running perfectly in Arch with WINE, so I'm sure you could get it working in Minty too, as most of the music player options in Linux are less than desirable.

Oh, and of course, the most important thing is the app icon is a Roswell alien head. And all the icons are color-coded versions of it for the different file types. That alone is worth having it.
