If this report is to be believed (and I have no reason not to take the man at his word) William Shatner will not be appearing in the new Star Trek film.

Although Shatner was approached by J.J. Abrams at one point to appear in Orci's film, it now appears that the new creative team is likely going in another direction. In this interview Mr Shatner says he has not been approached and knows nothing of the film.
“I don’t even know the guy who’s writing it. I know the director was let go, someone else was writing it…I have no prior knowledge. I am completely in the blind. I sincerely mean no one has talked to me about anything, nor should they.”
Despite claims to the contrary Shatner has been pretty straight forward in his discussions about being included in the new films with the one exception of letting the cat out of the bag when Abrams/Orci approached him to be in what would have been their version of ST 3. Even that was more of a misunderstanding than Shatner being misleading.
Hopefully the new writers and director can find a way to work William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy into the new film...If they don't it will be such a wasted opportunity on the 50TH anniversary of the franchise.
I have a bad feeling that instead of getting a thank you to the fans for the last 50 years we are going to get a franchise overhaul that has Star Trek trying to be the next "Guardians of the Galaxy" as some reports have indicated.
