William Shatner Apologizes For Star Trek V

Considering other more significant problems with the film Uhura's fan dance isn't even worth comment.

The fan dance (and the excruciating subplot of Uhura and Scotty's "high school crush") show the difference in dichotomy between The Wrath of Khan and The Final Frontier:

TWOK: "We're aging, and we're acknowledging our age. But that's okay, because with age comes wisdom, and a wealth of life experiences that can inform who we are today."

TFF: "We're all still young and happenin'!! See me climbing the mountain? ('Why am I climbing the mountain?') See sexy young Uhura doing her fan dance? We've still got it, kids!!!"

Somebody somewhere behind the scenes (hint: it was Shatner) was in serious denial. :D

Remember at the end of TWOK, Kirk felt young and alive again.

Watching it now. I still prefer it to some other films, simply because it reminds me of the series. Despite all its warts, I still enjoy it. But they should never have shoe horned many of the gags because the studio wanted them.

As for budget, I wonder how much that new bridge set cost them?

I do actually agree, vis a vis it feeling the most like the original TV show. That's why in my post a few pages back I made the observation that Shatner was certainly qualified for the task of writing/directing a Star Trek movie -- in it's bones, the film's story has got a ley-line that goes back to the spirit of TOS in a way even some of the other TOS movies don't. Mysterious God creatures, intruders coming aboard and hijacking the Enterprise, and even people in monster costumes were all staples of the original TV show that Shatner would've recalled, and his harkening back to that feels deliberate. Even Kirk climbing around on mountains is in tune with things like "Shore Leave", "Arena" and "Friday's Child". :D

I am ashamed to say, but I've seen this movie several times and I've never noticed Sybok's magic haircut.
Yeah, that bums me out hard for some reason. I guess 'cause it's one more in-your-face sign that no one cared that much?

Yeah, I never did understand where the instant attraction between Uhura and Scotty came from, and then it disappeared completely in ST:TUC. It kind of reminded me of Scotty's infatuation with Mira Romaine in "Lights of Zetar".

Kirk : "Is the doctor there or will I find him in Engineering?"

Don't forget, Nimbus 3 is similar concept to Sherman's planet.

You know, some of the effects that were so horrible on the big screen 27 years ago look good on my TV. I remember thinking the shot of the Enterprise in front of the moon was terrible. But on a 40" HDTV , they're not bad. But many like the shuttle craft shots still suck. Bad effects or not, their is still much to love about the trinity in this film.

Somes scenes with Sybok altering the engines for an anomaly to whisk 'em afar would've been nice.

The problem here is that Sybok isn't an engineer; he's just a religious fanatic. He no more knows how to tweak a starship's engines to go faster than I know how to tweak my car's engine to go faster.

He's apparently some kind of prodigy before he fell from grace. But I always imagined he could be inspired by this 'god' being in the same way the Cytherians inspired Barclay in The Nth Degree episode. He'd have to do something though that the Klingons could follow and they'd have to get back without Sybok. So it'd have to be the classic "subspace anomaly" or a temporary wormhole. Something of that order.

Apology...............................Accepted, Mr. Shatner!

What I never got - and still do not understand - is how someone so Over the Top, so Hammy, so much of the Action Guy on TOS, could've conceived of, directed and delivered such an uninspired product with this level of tediousness. It has none of The Shat's energy, or desire to entertain. It's very flat, so to speak. Even the takeover of Sybok's stronghold was lame and lifeless. Just a bunch of stuntment hitting their mark, getting hugged by Shatner and dropping to the ground. As a Valentine to Captain Kirk, TFF is wildly successful. But in every other way, it's very hard to believe that someone with Shatner's energy and hammyness could've crafted a picture like this ...

With the difference that Cytherians seemed to be harmless loonies.
