Will we actually see Discovery Fly?

One of the things I don’t like about this series (and there’s many things I do like) is we haven’t really seen ships actually flying in space. Granted there’s been a few scenes like the shuttle escape scene but these seem to be really close shots where you can barely make out what the ships are.

In terms of discovery, most of the shots are either doing the jumps or sitting still. I miss the common trek trope of just a ship coming toward the screen, or gliding peacefully in space. I wonder why the people who made this series have done the space shots the way they have. It makes everything feel like it is standing still and maybe a little small.

The warp effect is different now. More of the flashy rainbow stuff, and discovery mostly travels via spore anyway.

The external shots are also more localised, with nebula and other stellar features. The stock footage of the generic star field doesn't seem to cut it any more, though I would like to see it again, once or twice.

I agree...I don't think we've seen Discovery maneuvering at impulse once. I'd love to see that.

Why not though? Would people today really react negatively to just space and traveling through the Stars? Heck even in BSG we saw the ships moving without jumping every so often and you could tell what was going on. It’s really hard to do that in this series.

I'd love to see it swooping about a bit. 'Tis a pretty ship. Maybe a nice battle scene with some weird D7s too.

Having the ship fly through space would involve a visual effect shot lasting more than 2 and a half seconds, which we've seen from experience can't be done on this show

Seriously, the shot of Stella's ship flying off was about one second long. Would it really kill them to make these shots a tad longer?

The Discovery is beautiful but they're barely showing it.

Yes, that shot was weird. Very short with an immediate cut at the end and the angle was weird too. At first I thought for a second that a gigantic ship was docked at the port side of the Discovery but than I remembered Stella and her Dad traveled by transporter beam and it was just a very strange perspective in that effect shot.

The series has some really nice effect shots (like the Gormagander) but the producers also make a lot of strange aesthetic decisions in scenes that should be very simple . Well, that's representative for almost every aspect of the series so far.

All the space shots feel fast and really zoomed in. It's weird, not to mention how dark all the ships look to the point where you can't even see what's going on.

it would be funny if that was 1031's Achilles heel, she's an absolute tub when it comes to sub-warp manouvering. Even at the battle of Corvan II she just sorta hovered there.

I'd be down with a few flyby type shots. I'm sure we will get them down the line. I did really enjoy how they revealed the discovery with an Abrams style pan of the entire ship. Thought that was fantastic.

It seems like USS Discovery is participating in the space battle next with the USS Gagarin. So there may be a few passes.

The next episode hopefully gives a shot of her orbiting a planet...unless they take a shuttle there.
