Gatiss seems to flit between projects, I can't see him as a showrunner, devoting an awful lot of years to it as Moffat has done.
I think you're right. Mark Gatiss has a fantastic career, he can write, play dramatic and comedic roles, on camera and on stage, he has directed movies and written novels. I can't see him sacrificing all that for a stint as Doctor Who showrunner.

I think we'll end up with a dull BBC apparatchik, one that will run Doctor Who as if it were just any other show.

And I think that would be a shame. Whatever your view of RTD or Moffat at least both injected verve and originality into the show, and under either tenure you could rarely call the show dull or pedestrian.

There's a certain dynamic with the Doctor and the stories the show has always told. I don't think BBC would take the risk of totally screwing up the magic formula with such a major change. I think the Mistress is the biggest gender bender we will see.

Moffat needs to go, and soon.

What difference would that make? I can't imagine any realistic replacement for him wouldn't feel the same way.

As Michelle Gomez has shown, outside of the unrepresentative world of Internet Message Boards the only thing most people care about is are they a good actor or not.

Agreed. Though I don't expect Moffat to remain long enough to cast Capaldi's replacement, if he did, he could cast a female Doctor. And if he didn't, then his successor very well could, perhaps even for the reason that he (or even she) could feel like they're putting their own stamp on the program by breaking new ground in that way.

At which point we find out exactly why the TARDIS didn't like Clara...because the next lottery on who will be the Doctor's face, goes to...Jenna Coleman.

That would be a twist in a half. Not only make the next Doctor a woman, but have the face of his own companion. (a throw back to the mini-sode of the multiple Clara's in the control room...two of them had to share a bed).

Typ, I'm sure if RTD were still in the captain's chair he'd be at least considering it as well.

I doubt even Moffat would do that!

That said since it does appear that Timelords can take on the appearance of people they've met before, either unconsiously (Maxil, the guy from Pompeii) or consiously (Princess Astra) it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that the Doctor could regenerate into someone played by a former companion (personally I reckon Arthur Darvil would make a cracking Doctor one day) but I doubt it'd ever be a particularly recent companion, and of all the Nu Who companions I think only Darvill or Tate would make my list--and even then I'd probably defer to a one off appearance actor first (Olivia Colman, Helen McCrory)

Watched 'Mark of the Rani' on Hulu the other day (first time since the 80's I have seen it). When the Rani and the Doctor first meet in her lab there is mention of how female Timeladies can choose there appearance unlike males. This was probably added by Pip and Jan Baker to add support to how Romana was changing appearance in Destiny of the Daleks.

cant see the doctor as a woman,ok it worked great for the master\missy,but if the doctor was to regenerate into a woman and she doesn't work than she can regenerate back into a man

er...the same way if Tennant, Smith or Capaldi hadn't have worked they could regenerate into someone else?

Or even into another woman, one who would wok out.

Or into a zebra. The next Doctor should be a transgender zebra. Black or white? Man or woman? Who knows, who cares? This is Doctor Who, let's watch some Daleks blow up.

It's the idea that somehow there aren't any women out there who could do just as good a job as a man that baffles me. If Matt Smith had regenerated into, say, Tilda Swinton I can't think of any way the last series would have been any different or poorer for it.

Coming in without having read any of this thread...

I'd love to see Emma Watson as the next doctor. Doctor regenerates, stands up, is Emma Watson. Looks down at chest, sees breasts, then looks at the camera and says, "Oh, bloody hell!"
