Of more interest to me will her wardrobe. Not that it should really matter; it's just idle curiosity. Will it be something "gender neutral" that either sex might wear without someone raising a dubious eyebrow, or will it have elements some would debate as strictly "feminine", articles of clothing that would bother some people to see a man wear?
Romana II's first outfit was a dusty pink version of the Doctor's coat, with a long, off-white scarf. But before that, while she was still regenerating, she wore a smaller version of the Doctor's own outfit.

Oh, I remember that scene quite well. In fact, I spent a bit of time awhile ago trying to recreate that pink ensemble in Poser format (a 3D rendering suite). A fellow Poser user, AlDemps, and I traded ideas as to what available meshes might work best.

I do suspect the "Doctor's own outfit" she wears earlier (to hide the fact she's decided to remain looking like Astra) was indeed spares of Tom's ensemble. The wee waif of a lady was postiveley "lost" within the extra yards of fabric...which made the scenes even funnier.

Sincerely,

Bill

Could Moffat be anymore obvious he is preparing to cast a female doctor after Capaldi! First the Master, and now Clara acting like the Doctor and thing with the opening credits. Lets just hope Capaldi outlasts Moffat's tenure as showrunner.

Don't forget the "Or Queen" at the end.

The swerve will be instead of a woman they actually make the Doctor a bald blue guy.

Earlier I said in this thread I stated, if Moffat is around to cast the next Doctor, it either means that Moffat has been around too long or Capaldi is around too short!!

I stand by that!

I hope Moffat sticks around long enough to cast a female Doctor before giving all the sexist fans the finger and swanning off to his next project.

^Yes, that's where I'm coming from too. New blood, invigoration and all that. Star Trek suffered from having the same people in charge year in year out, IMHO.

I kind of think you might be right - Moffat will probably hand over the reins to a new showrunner when the next regeneration is due, so they get a semi-clean slate like he had.

Who will be the next showrunner is a real head-scratcher, Moffat was an obvious choice. I guess they could be grooming Jamie Mathieson for the role, or a safer pair of hands like that Being Human guy.

Well in the coming year or so we might see Peter Jackson's take on the Doctor if he indeed is allowed to direct an episode. The Hobbit will be over and I seem to recall what he asked for to do the task was a Dalek. It would likely be a Dalek episode though.

Though I wonde if they will have something special planned for the 10th Anniversary of Doctor Who's return to the screen. It will have been 10 years since "Rose" next year.

(Though having Jenna Coleman's eyes in place of Capaldi's eyes in the opening with her name credited first was somewhat inspired and silly at the same time).

Gatiss is somewhat of a logical choice. He has been doing Doctor Who for a long time. He specializes in historical setting though. "An Adventure Through Space and Time" was well regarded over "Day of the Doctor" as the 50th Anniverary Special.

And like Moffat, he's not perfect on his scripts. "Robots of Sherwood Forest" seemed to get mixed reviews depending on how realistic people wanted thing to be. "The Crimsom Horror" also gets a divide. I liked both, but that's because I like that sort of humor in Doctor Who. Other like more seriousness.

It's too early to vote. When Capaldi is confirmed to be leaving, or completes three seasons without leaving, then I think it'll be a meaningful point of discussion. In any case, they'd probably need to reconsider the series' formula (Would the single female companion approach continue?), the Doctor's approach to his nomadic lifestyle, etc. DoctorDonna was pretty impressive (much more than regular Donna, imho) so I think we have something of a precedent.

Anyway, I don't see Capaldi the hardcore Whovian giving up the reins of the TARDIS any time soon.

What this Doctor needs is a either a Timelord friend, or a Jamie McCrimmon type companion.

I'm so divided on Gatiss. I have a lot of time for him, I love his horror documentaries and he's written some great non/semi Who stuff.
It's just that his actual Who episodes have been a little ropey at times.

Episodes I like: The Unquiet Dead, Cold War, The Crimson Horror (it might even be fairer to say I adore the Crimson Horror to bits)
Episodes that are a bit meh: The Idiot's Lantern, Victory of the Daleks, Night terrors and Robots of Sherwood.

I think he has been handed a duff brief at times, especially with Victory, and to some degree the Robin Hood episode, Moffat sees him as a go to guy for a certain type of episodes, the kind that usually seem to involve a shopping list: "I want Daleks and Spitfires and Churchill and new Daleks and Robin Hood and robots, and flying castles etc etc..."

With this in mind for me at least is the question, if he was showrunner would we get Crimson Horror Gatiss or the Idiot's Lantern Gatiss?
I guess what I'm trying to suggest is that he doesn't seem anywhere near as consistent a writer as either Moffat or RTD, but then again I guess you have to ask who is? Gaiman's got a 50/50 rep at the moment IMO, which is about on parr with Gatiss. Whithouse? I’d say one great story, one good story and one poor story. He has experience of running a show though, but then so does Gatiss.

My choice would still be someone like Joe Aherne, and I do wonder if the BBC are likely to want a succession from Moffat to Gatiss?

I wouldn’t be unhappy with Gatiss. He’s a fan and he knows his stuff and even his poor episodes are never really terrible. I also suspect that, despite his close association with Moffat, that he would produce a very different kind of Who, possibly even something almost gothic in nature given his love of all things Hammer etc. Pertwee is his Doctor which would likely suit Capaldi as well.

It’s all hypothetical though, Gatiss may be top of the list, he may not be even on the list, he may not even be interested.

^ It may be time to go back to the model where the showrunner doesn't write the episodes but guides the direction. Maybe the showrunner could write one or two, if he/she wanted, but not so many as they've done for the new series. This takes a lot of burden off the showrunner if they don't need to crank out so many.

I can see the advantage either way. Having one person run the show and write a decent number of episodes does allow for a consistency of vision that might be lost if you had 12 writers doing an episode each, even if the show runner was directing things.

I still think (regeneration episodes aside) the show runner should let someone else shoulder the Christmas special, that’s always seemed unnecessary additional work for both Moffat and RTD. Let someone else do it and focus your attention on the new series would be my view. Let Garteth Edwards or Gatiss or someone else do it. Actually a Gaiman Christmas episode would be a sight to see!

Gatiss seems to flit between projects, I can't see him as a showrunner, devoting an awful lot of years to it as Moffat has done.

Might be wrong though!

I suspect you're right, although the chance to run his own version of his all time favourite show might prove too tempting. I have a suspicion that if he did do it his tenure would be shorter than either RTD or Moffat. 2/3 years max.
