Will StarTrekOnline happen?

There is now a countdown clock on the game developer Cryptic's website.
It has some imagery used in previous STO promotional material.
In 40 days or so they will be confirming that they are indeed working on the game and will most likely have it released soon.

^^^ That would be nice, but I doubt release will be anytime that soon. More likely, beta testing would start in about 2 years, release in 3. Only problem with MMORPGS is the incredibly long development cycle involved.

Unfortunatly its still the same timer thats counting down to their Hero's game release date, but please post a link so we can confirm because i cant find any other clock with a 40 days count down, only one i can see is the 32 days countdown for Camp online game.

I don't see anything like a countdown clock that specifically refers to Star Trek.

Again, the 'Countdown Clock' on their site refers to an event concerning the one MMORPG Cryptic Games is currently working on; and that's Champions On-Line (A superhero MMORPG based on the 'Champions' pen&paper superhero RPG). It's not the release date for the Champions game either; as that's scheduled for sometime in mid-2009. The game is still in Alpha testing; and the earliest Beta testing is probably 6 or more months away.

Star Trek On-Line seems shelved for the time being. If a developer ever decides to pick it up again remains to be seem. Seems it's gone the way of Secret of Vulcan's Fury.

i dont know if it's gone for good... if people think money can be made off it, it'll probably come out.

honestly, doing a star trek game would be a tough game to make.

Link to some evidence that the countdown clock is for Champions online.

I can't see any myself.

The artwork used on the countdown clock which now reads 29 days is art taken directly from Star Trek online screenshots database.
It is nothing to do with Champions online IMO.

(Look in the upper-right corner). This is the only MMO Cryptic is currently working on finishing atm.

People on other forums swear down that this is for STO.
I can't explain why it is on the Champions page but I think the artwork is from STO.

A countdown timer has appeared on the official Cryptic Studios website in the 'games' section, pointing to a new game announcement from the MMO specialists on the 27th July.

Cryptic was the original developer of superhero MMO City of Heroes, and is now working on the rival Champions Online. It is heavily rumoured to be the "Bay Area developer" that picked up the Star Trek Online project from Perpetual Entertainment when that studio went into liquidation early this year.

The countdown timer features a space graphic that clearly suggests a science fiction project, and some commentators claim to recognise it as early concept art produced by Perpetual for Star Trek Online.

July 27th is the final day of the San Diego Comic-Con, a very likely venue for the official unveiling of such a high-profile cult licence. Be sure to check back then for the official word.

Also confirmed is that they will be attending the convention.

I'm still unsure why they would have a timer for a announcement for STO on the champions online website.....seems a bit strange, anybody interested in champions online will automatically assume the timer is something to do with that game, seeing as the entire website is related to Champions online game.....

Plus even if it was STO i don't think anybody should get their hopes up of playing it any time soon, from what we have seen of the game and the delays that were caused by perpetual going bankrupt i don't think STO if it is announced, will see light of day until 2010, i mean it was slated for release in this year by perpetual but even they were shifting the release date into 2009 before they went belly up in 2007.

I suppose we will know for sure in 26 days.

Oh definitely. MMOs take a LONG time develop and the Cryptic team is going to start from scratch here, so won't see anything playable for some time. It'll most likely be an official announcement that they're developing it, and not much more than that.

It might be worth noting on the Champions' website the timer is prefaced with the words "Meanwhile..." which would indicate to me it's for something other than that game. There's also a large crossover between Star Trek/Science Fiction fans and people who like the superhero genre, so they're probably aiming to entice as many people as possible.

A lot of people are reading into that Meanwhile... as being separate to the counter on the main page. The two countdowns are slightly out of sync too. Put this with the STO site reading "Coming Soon" and a lot of rumours flying about saying Cryptic took over development, I think it's good to be finally excited about something Trek that doesn't cause massive amounts of controversy among the fans *cough* Trek XI *cough*

If they've just been messing with us, I've gotta say... nice burn :p

I've gotta say tho, if the game does go ahead (which I admit, is a mammoth task no matter what they do, and the internet could be long dead by the time it goes into beta), I'm still pretty excited about it

I hope it happens and the countdown is related to it.
I'm met with massive doubt everywhere I posted this news.
Hopefully, I'll be proved right and all the naysayers can bow down.

I think your taking it a bit personal, its nothing to do with nobody believing the news your posting, people are just a bit sceptical that the game will ever show, and even if it were to be announced its realistically not going to see the light of day until 2010/11......not exactly news that we should all be dancing round a may pole cheering too.

Darren, I hope like crazy that they manage to get things together and release the game. Given that I've been disapointed by Trek Gaming in the past, I've decided not to get my hopes up too high in this case.

Tis all said in jest. I hope this is an announcement and I will indeed dance around a may pole when they announce it's coming in 2011.
