Will ST09 have legs?

Will it have legs? It's Star Trek, it has made an overwhelmingly positive impact. If the sequel can match or more likely and even better, improve on that, it will.

Depends on the quality of the sequel. Because they used just about every Star Trek cliche in the first film. I'm guessing they'll use every Star Wars cliche in the sequel. :guffaw:

You guess?

I think we can expect something along the lines of:

"Well, cute little R1 of Delta Two, I guess you're too little to run away if I take this off...<snap> Hey, where did that Uhura threesome go? Bring them back! Play back the entire recording!

This movie has made inroads into areas that other Star Trek movies haven't: box office, public awareness and an Academy Award. People who wouldn't have given Star Trek a second thought before are fans of this movie and would even see it beyond the original theatrical release.

This tells me that the legs are there and they're still running.

RT.

Maybe it will have wings.

Maybe... once this series is over and TNG gets it's own reboot, Trek 09 will be thought of as the beginning of a new franchise almost as big as the previous 5 series'... all taking place in this alternate timeline.

You mean will it end up being considered a classic in say 30 years or more?

Then my answer will have to be no.

Probably true - though, again, other than hard core trekkies few consider any of the other Trek films to be classic cinema either (TWOK does have a cheering section among professional critics and is well-remembered by the public; it would be the exception).

Are you looking for responses besides "no"?

Hopefully, since very few are going to be "no."

I think they'll get one more movie and that'll be it. Paramount will revert to form and slash the budget back to something resembling reality and JJ won't have the same bag of tricks to play with the second time around, which means the whole thing will hinge on the writing.

May God have mercy on their souls.

May God have mercy on us.

Going back to the same bag of tricks is something Star Trek ( in all forms) excells at. The audience rarely seems to mind. They'll even give time travel and the reset button a pass most of the time.

How many years until those of us who watched Trek in the late 1960s (I'm not one of them) are all dead?

Hey, a lot of them bet against the first one despite every sensible reason to expect it to succeed - and it did. Why should they not take long odds again...and fail again?
Do you have a single example of this "a lot"?

We have people in and out of our home constantly, Mom's ambulance, home health care and nursing personnel, as well as friends and family. In my living room is the Burger King drinking glasses promotional stand-up. It is quite the conversation starter.

I fully expected comments like, "I see you're one of those trekkies" or such. Instead, the usual comments are, "That's a cool display! Where did you get it?" or "I see you like Star Trek. Cool movie." For me it is one more sign that this movie "has legs" among the general public.
