Why were Data's and Worf's quarters so small?

Most Klingons apparently sleep on an empty metal shelf, & deliberately jab themselves with pain sticks. I can imagine that having the least luxurious room would be a bloody honor.

Both sides of the debate here about Data have been fun to consider. Yes he's an android, but also yes, he likes to partake in human indulgences for the experience, but ALSO also, he doesn't necessarily, do those things at the expense of others.

So if someone else could legitimately benefit from a more comfy quarters, I imagine he wouldn't take it from that potential candidate just to have the observational experience

He's a fairly accommodating person. If he didn't need the space, I can imagine him not bothering. As for Geordi, he might just want to be in a more utilitarian section, because of his job.. As chief, his real home is that engineering room, & I bet he's staked out space for himself there too.

In fact, if Worf, Geordi, & maybe even Data are department heads, why wouldn't they also have an office of their own too? Or Riker for that matter?

^Perhaps on Klingon ships, quarters become more spartan, the higher the rank :)

(Except that I would always expect the captain to have a room to himself. He'd probably need a place to be able to seclude himself, even if only to just think).

Chakotay has an office on Voyager, so presumably Riker has one too on the Enterprise.

Something else to consider: O'Brien and Keiko had small quarters too, even after they got Molly. So that kinda goes against my families-first argument.

And somewhere to avoid the constant onslaught of murderous junior officers lol

One the junior officers in lower decks wanted to make lieutenant jg to get his own quarters and not have to share with the vulcan engineer.maybe the quarters go bigger along with rank

We might be able to explain that one away with timing. You'd need to request larger quarters once you are eligible. What's the time gap between Molly's birth and O'Brien leaving for DS9? If it's within a year the move to new quarters wouldn't be worth it.

Also, just because we know how big the set is, doesn't mean the quarters are that big. O'Brien might have bigger quarters, where what we think is the bathroom door actually leads to other rooms.

Geordi having smaller quarters made sense in Season One when he was a lowly Lieutenant (Junior Grade).
It beggars belief as he gets promoted to full Lieutenant, Chief Engineer and finally Lieutenant-Commander

And to guard himself from underlings who are trying to "help him retire" before he thinks he's ready, by assassinating him and taking over as captain.

worf and riker had offices, we see them in a couple of episodes. And, as other have pointed out, laforge seems to have an office area in engineering (when that set was reworked for voyager they gave her a proper office).

As for Data, I don’t think he needs an office: crew evaluation seem to be riker’s and troi’s responsibility and he doesn’t seem to have much use for one.

Perhaps Geordi doesn't want a room with a view because he wouldn't get the benefit of it with his VISOR.

He'd be able to perceive way more stuff in space than a full sighted person would I think. Maybe he doesn't want a view because space looks like an uncomfortable acid trip to him?

Sorry, no. I remember noticing them in my most recent TNG rewatch, but I haven’t written down the episodes they appear in.

^ You have fully piqued my curiosity. I don't remember seeing anyone with an office except Picard, Crusher & Troi

Well, he's chief of security, so it would make sense for Worf having an office. But I don't really remember if they ever showed it....

Perhaps he never bothered applying for the bigger quarters. He probably has five years of unread emails from Troi saying "we've talked about this; you really need to fill in the attached form to apply for the new stateroom you're entitled to as a Lt.Cmdr; the chicks'll love it."

Are they actually described as Worf's/Riker's office, or are they office/meeting spaces that those characaters happen to be using? I always understood that area to the side of Engineering to be LaForge's "office."

As for Data, I don’t think he needs an office: crew evaluation seem to be riker’s and troi’s responsibility and he doesn’t seem to have much use for one.

He was Chief Operations Manager and Chief Science Oficer; presumably he'd need office space to do jobs associated with those roles.

Presumably, the largest part of the Riker/Troi crew evaluations we see is compiling and summarising the crew evaluations the different department heads have done. There's no point Troi trying to assess Ensign Astair's phaser maintenance or Riker critiquing Nurse Ginger's suturing technique.

Well, many companies today have "rotating" offices. Free spaces that employees can reserve and use as an office. Perhaps it's the same on the Enterprise? If a hypothetical Worf office were only occupied one percent of the time, it would be just a waste.

Good point. That confirms ranks plays a role.

Also true - and especially in the case of the O'Briens I hope that's true! Otherwise where does Molly sleep?
