Why was Worf added to DS9 in Season 4 ?

there's another element here: paramount insisted DS9 use the klingons as adversaries and they wanted to add a TNG character to the cast, so worf was the perfect fit. the creators have said worf was natural for both the klingon storyline thrust on them and the overall tone of the show they had always been going for. the inclusion of the klingons also totally threw off their plans for the dominion, but honestly i think it worked out for the better.

"nor the battle strong" and "rules of engagement" being the exceptions to that statement.

Worf was the right choice in terms of TNG characters to add, and DS9 did far far more with him than TNG. Did more with the Klingons too, though that started before Worf (Blood Oath and House of Quark were in the second and third season respectively, and great Klingon episodes).

The decision to ramp up the (ultimately defused) conflict with the Klingons in the fourth and fifth season was a mistake however. It worked out fine at the time, but it resulted in the planned schedule for the Dominion War being pushed back, negatively hurting the endgame of the series. Worf would have been a fine addition to the show and had plenty to do without any of that happening.

The writers could've had her ascend to a higher plain of existence which put her in touch with the Prophets, only to be ripped out of it when a runabout was passing through the wormhole and end up taking up residence on the station, having lost her mental powers. She'd make a good assistant for Bashir.
It's pretty easy to slot anyone onto DS9. I don't even think Kes would need a role. What did Ziyal do on the station? Beats me. Why does Martok's Bird of Prey permanently berth at DS9? Doesn't matter. Shouldn't Ross have his meetings aboard his flagship, the USS Must Have a Name? Reasons.

What did Kes do on Voyager?
Ziyal went to the sauna with a certainly tailor, and made her art.
Martok's bird of prey was out preying on Jem Hadar most of the time, and the station was great but it wasn't a Klingon port.
I can see reasons for Ross putting his flag on the station. More space, frees the ships to go into combat situations that might be too risky for the admiral and his staff. (He must have had a staff besides Sisko, mustn't he?)

I think Ross had his post at Starbase something something, which seemed to be a short distance away

I liked Work.. er Worf on Ds9, he was a good addition, but the 2 season of the Klingon war was.. hammy.. It broke up the series.. they were just getting in to the Dominion, and .. woop.. nevermind for 2 years, then back to it..

Worf was written far better on DS9 than he was on TNG. Also, notice how DS9 could add a character without taking away from the others? Poor Kes, if only she’d been on DS9.

I very much prefer DS9 Worf to TNG Worf, though I liked him just fine on TNG. He got to be much funnier on DS9.

Plus, on TNG, when he killed Duras, he was scolded by Picard. On DS9, Sisko practically ordered him to kill Gowron.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Go back to the first episode of this series. The Cardassians were the big baddies--inlighting, acting choices, etc. If the Maquis or Bajor presented a major problem for Sisko, sure enough the Cardassians were behind it. We were headed to war with them. "So, if you want a war...I'll give you one!"

Softening them was necessary for the show to not make it so obvious where it was headed.

"Forget the speech, Dukat, just meet me at the rendezvous point."
"I am the only Cardassian left! And, if no one else will stand against the Klingons, I will!"

In terms of character, Kira is helping Cardassians in their oppression of the Klingons. Dukat becomes sympathetic, but "it's my nature" comes to mind.

The war, as it was, could've wrapped in the sixth season finale, and really helped the show to focus its energy on the peace, and fallout, from the war. If anything, it drug on about a half-season too long. My problems with the pacing are in the opposite direction. I got sick of it.

I’m new around here and pretty new to Star Trek. I’ve been watching DS9 for the first time...and I just got to Season 4 where Work joins the crew,

I was curious..,why exactly was he added to the cast at that time? I like Work and everything... but I’m just curious how that decision came about? Was it a ratings thing? Was the actor looking for work? Why did they add Worf and not someone else from Next Generation?

Thanks for any info!

It was purely to boost ratings, just like the decision to add the Defiant was. However, as with the Defiant, the ratings ultimately did not increase in any significantly appreciable manner. Ratings slowly declined with every new season of DS9.

just like the decision to add the Defiant was
Certainly, they set about to design a crowd-pleaser, but the decision to create a new ship was based on production needs. The Runabout sets were largely unworkable, not allowing more than a few actors at a time, really only two comfortably, and offered few filming angles. It was a source of great frustration for directors, DPs, lighting, etc.

Yes, that's true. But the decision was ultimately made so that DS9 could be more of a ship-based show like TNG was, in order to lure more TNG fans who might not necessarily have appreciated the different format of a station-based show.

That phrase gets really annoying rewatching the show, especially in season 6 & 7. There are better alternatives. I think I will compile them all one day and upload to youtube, along with "Delta Quadrant," "stuck in the Delta Quadrant," "stranded in the Delta Quadrant," et al.

And with O'Brien, we had two TNG characters serving on DS9. I wonder if any other TNG character could've fit in? Let's say Dr. Pulaski.
I can't remember where I read or heard it, but there was a rumor circulating that old Scotty was considered for the engineer role on DS9, by way of his reappearance in the 24th Century (in the previous falls episode "Relics") I heard this several times in '92 when DS9 was in development. Then Relics came along and people said "see? this is how they're going to get him there" but it went to O'Brien instead. Just imagine...

I've heard that J. Doohan was in extremely poor health by the time of "Relics," and had great difficulty getting through filming.
