Why Was The Actor Who Played Benjamin Sisko Replaced

Which Actor Did You Prefer

For Sisko, I don't know why they didn't just get the guy who played Benny Russell. I liked him. He looked a little like Gabriel Bell.

I think you're confusing them. Gabriel Bell, with hair on his head and smooth face, looked like Avery Brooks. The actor who played Benny Russel, with a goa-dyke and shave head, looked like Avery Brooks. Everyone would know that the coffee was replaced with Folgers!

Ah, but the real question is: which Sisko actor was the best singer?

"Allamaraine, count to four, Allamaraine, then three more..."

vs

"The best iS yet to come..."

This thread takes me back to that Jayson thread where all the Captains wanted to kill him. I wonder which version of Sisko wanted to kill him. I'm tipping the second one because the first one was a bit of a pussy.

Well, there was precedent for such a replacing of starring characters. The first time it happened was in the 1988-1989 when they replaced the actor who played Commander Riker in the first season with another guy in the second who had a beard.

I like the bearded Riker better. That beard defeated Locutus of Bored..I mean Borg. :)

Defeated? Locutus, played by a fine Roman actor (you can tell by the accent), became the new captain after that Frenchman left.

Patrick wearing hair and little else as Oberon in an RSC performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

I may be wrong, but...

I'm fairly certain that's Roger Moore in Zardoz.

I assume that's just a joke you're making?

...Seeing as it's Sean Connery that's in Zardoz, not Roger Moore.

I honestly didn't mind when they recast Sisko. But I took it pretty freakin personally when Paramount/Viacom/CBS/Bob's Big Boy decided to recast ME! And they couldn't even be honest with me about it. I had to find out by reading quoutes from an interview on TMZ. "Well he's just not what we envisioned when we cast the part of The Trekkie." "We've decided to take his character in a different direction." "Frankly we just don't feel that he's believable as a fan of Star Trek." I gave you people some of the best hours of my basement dwelling existence and this is how you repay me? Well screw you.

The truth is Avery Brooks prefers to shave his head and wear a goatee, however he was contractually obligated for the first two seasons to have hair on his head and no facial hair. The producers did not want the audience to see him as Hawk.

Which really worked out, because early Sisko didn't have much impact. But season 4 onward, Sisko becomes a badass.
