Why was Mabel Barret really dropped as Number One?

I demand a Grapes of Wrath meme of this!

I tried. I really tried!

"Number One" and "engage", at least two bits from The Cage that were reused later in TNG. Were there any others? (Riker wasn't genetically engineered, as far as we know.)

Well, it wasn't the Cage, but it was still from an unreleased pilot..... TNG not only uses Number One and Engage, but the whole concept of Ilia/Decker shadowed with Troi/Riker (telepathic sexual alien, the past relatoinship, the name William...) and Data as Xon, curious about human emotions. TNG was a collection of all unused material from the past, it seems. Lol!

This thread needs a catchy theme song....

And, yes, Number One does end up as a captain in her own right, at least in the books.
What's she called at that point, Number Zero?

With a good dose of THE QUESTOR TAPES as well.

Actually her name is Numera-Won and is of South Asian and Korean ancestry. Pike often fumbles the pronunciation.

I remember the reference...but it gave me the appetite nevertheless. Crunch time, indeed.

If tptb objected to Majel just on the basis of her acting, why did they allow her to play Chapel?

Big difference to opening credits cast and semi-regular (perhaps one-episode?) guest.

I seem to recall an anecdote whereby Majel turned up on the set in a blonde wig to convince Roddenberry she was now unrecognizable, and could play a new role - and Gene was, at first, fooled.

Yeah, right.

I didn't see a problem with how she performed in the episode! But does anyone know what her real name was, ie: the character in novels, fan fiction!

A "Star Trek Mysteries... Solved!" article in "Best of Trek" suggested that Number One and Christine Chapel were sisters, so some old fanfics used "Hudec" or "Chapel" as her surname, and "Leigh" as a first name.

When I used the character in a fanfic in the 80s, I called my promoted Number One "Admiral Certaine" (I looked up synonyms for "one" in a thesaurus for inspiration). Not long afterwards, I was reading Brad Ferguson's "A Flag Full of Stars" installment of "The Lost Years" saga, and suddenly thought I recognized that a woman he named Timothea Rogers (commentating an event with Robert April) could easily have been Number One. Blow me down if Brad didn't email me and confirm that the character had been tweaked by the Star Trek Office. In his original manuscript (once downloadable from his website), she was indeed Number One!

Peter David has often teased about the identity of Morgan Primus (get it?) and, when the "New Frontier" book characters first went to comics, the artist hid Morgan's face with a hand mirror (WildStorm), and then drew her as Number One (IDW).

Marvel/Paramount Comics gave her surname as Robbins (coincidence; Morgan Primus was later revealed as Robin Lefler's mother in "New Frontier" - EDIT) and, in one scene, Pike starts saying her first name and is interrupted, the balloon text starting as "Eure-".

Marvel/Paramount Comics gave her surname as Robbins (perhaps harkening back to being Robin Lefler's mother in "New Frontier"?)
Seems unlikely, since Star Trek: Early Voyages debuted before New Frontier. The first issue of EV had a February 1997 cover date (which would mean it was in comics shops in late 1996), and New Frontier debuted in 1997 and didn't debut Lefler's mother until sometime later.

Or maybe her name is actually Number One.
Number Leigh One, daughter of Steven Michael One and Nora Adele One (née Chapel), sister of Ember Andrew One and Kimber Charlotte One, almost identical cousin of Christine Chapel.

This sounds completely believable and not like a made up story at all.:guffaw:

Yeah she was very familiar in looks to Nurse Chapel! Wonder how they explained that if ever?
