IDK, something always seemed off about her, maybe it was the fact that I like my women to have jagged teeth of steel and she was a soft delicate flower, whom was the nicest girl on earth ....... until she wasn't and she turned on the dude who was actually the nicest guy on the ship .... Neelix. I understand that this is writing and not her fault, but her character ended up morphing into the sum total of everything I hated about seriously dating girls my age, when I was in my teens and early twenties. I guess that would of been cool, if they had written her into the show like they did Ezri Dax in DS9, but they wanted to give her all of the maturity of a 90 year old woman, but without the character and loyalty to match. I absolutely love B'Elanna Torres and Captain Janeway grew on me in a major way as well, but I never ended up liking Kes at all and since I started the show with the knowledge that she got iced at some point, I began to anticipate her annoying soft voice and overtly nice attitude with everyone except neelix whom she used as an emotional punching bag.
Kes was written off to 1) make room for Seven. Of course, producers submitted that her character didn't "print" in minds of fans but the same was valid for Kim, Naomie & Sam Wildman, wasn't it?! -> we saw them less often and it was ok. 2) for a financial question. Production costs were raised and money dedicated to the main cast was already highly raised -> to have both Ryan & Lien seemed impossible..., what didn't prevent the producers, to find money to hire, later, 4 useless children to interpret Bog kids and to keep 1, Manu Intiraymi alias Icheb, until the end! 3) as far as Kes was an integral part of Neelix, because she was his fiancée. Once separated, it seemed difficult to associate her to another one, as seeing as producers refused that she exists by herself, forgetting that she was the assistant of the doctor during 3 years, quite studying medical courses... . She could have been a very experienced medical assistant or better, practicing counseling (if the EMH and Chakotay did it, I don't see why Kes wouldn't be a right choice, as seeing as she had all qualities to do this work!), what Voyager was deprived.
