Why isn't Tron out on DVD?

Yeah, the original is kinda dated, but then again it was set in the 1980s. Shouldn't a movie about a computer world in the 1980s look like it could be made by a computer in the 1980s? The film is still an incredibly unique visual treat. It's sad that Disney thinks today's audiences are too dumb to appreciate it.

Yeah, exactly. It is what it is, and it was hugely influential, and Disney should be proud of that. I could see not wanting people to rent it before the movie, but they shouldn't block sales. I do think it's still available. I think it's an embargo that they've done by asking stores to take it out of stock, both online and offline. Somewhere, there's probably a warehouse full of copies.

Being dated is usually bad. One of the reasons I loved ESB so much is that it feels timeless.

But Tron is one of the few movies that can get away with it.

If Disney wants to hide movies in the vault, it should be embarrassing crap like Wild Hogs! :)

Maybe you'll only be able to buy the sequel bundled with the original! Price tag? Fifty bucks!

I think they'll release a new remaster on BD/DVD after the sequel comes out to cash in on it. I can't imagine any company that likes money would withhold something old just because people might think it's dated or whatever. There is plenty of stuff out there that sells based on nostalgia alone I'm reasonably sure the new DVD releases of Transformers and GI Joe from Shout Factory had no impact on their live action counterparts box office performance. Instead they became a license to print money.

Tron is an out-of-print DVD which fetches a premium. It is not possible, as it is most movies, to buy this DVD in a store on on Amazon for a "reasonable"/normal price

Aside from "what is the big deal about an Amazon purchase?", I have to ask, is this the point of this thread? To complain that something is suddenly in demand and so its price on the free market has risen to more than it was before?

I highly doubt that will be the case. I'm sure the remastered original film will hit DVD and BR the same time as Legacy does, but I'm also sure they'll be available individually as well as in a box (if they even have that).

I heard that Disney is holding the re-release (including a new Blu-Ray) until TRON LEGACY comes out on home video, because their audience data showed that audiences were much more nostalgic (and interested in seeing TRON LEGACY) when they hadn't seen the first film in a long time.
:rommie: Hilarious!

I can definitely see the reasoning behind this. The original came out so long ago that they're absolutely going to make sequel accessible to newcomers. And what with the economy the way it is, and most disposable entertainment income likely to go to stuff one can put in boxes beneath trees, is it really that unlikely that people would rent Tron, find it just okay, and decide to rent Legacy?

Amazon has some for sale, from second party persons, for over $100. They're being sold for this price because they're no longer being made and "new copies" are scarce.

Or maybe you could stop being ignorant, and acknowledge the fact that Dimesdan pointed out, 4 pages ago, that you can get one for £20 off the UK Amazon site.

Yes, and its Region 2 which does most Americans, with only Region 1 players, absolutely no good.

It's been a long time since I came across a DVD player that was region locked, with no way for anyone remotely technically capable (i.e. can use Google) to unlock it.

Variety weighs in:

Those bodysuits, by the way, are now sexy, jet-black foam-latex numbers with built-in lights of various colors, rather than the unflattering white spandex of the original (which vfx guys hand-illuminated via backlit animation) -- not that folks will be comparing things too closely. Although the 1982 film has its own cult-like following, mostly among geeks and stoners, Disney has strategically allowed the DVD to go out of print. That means younger auds will discover this slick film first, buying into the sequel's radically upgraded look before having a chance to revisit its clunky prototype.

Oh great, I've now been lumped into the geek/stoner category..Do those 2 things supposedly go hand in hand?

RAMA

Ok, I'm getting a little insulted. I just watched the first film, liked it, but then I read the Hollywood Reporter review, which completely went out of the way to slam the first film, and now I just read this excerpt from Veriety taking a shot of the fans calling them stoners? Really? Is this what we can expect for all the reviews. I know it's opinion and these various authors can wipe their asses with it (Or something like that) but if all the reviews are going out of thier way to slam the first film and those who liked the first film, how is that professional again?

Oh, and in 30 years, all the films that come out now will be laughed upon. People can't appreciate the time in which films were made anymore and that's a bloody shame.

Which part of Variety's "geeks and stoners" is unclear? The grammar and sentence construction obviously two separate,if not necessarily mutually-exclusive, groups. As for commenting on the quality of the previous film, I'd hardly call that "unprofessional", unless you'd say the same for a SW PT review that compared it/them to the OT.

Well since both "groups" are used to describe the make-up of single cult, then I'm assuming they're pretty much meant to be the same type of fan and are the only ones capable of liking it until others are brainwashed by the glossy sequel. Didn't you notice this insinuation? Guess not..

Yeah lumping "geeks" and "stoners" into the same group is hardly... Flattering. To either group, probably. And, really, though I've never been stoned I can't see there being much "stoned-worthy" elements in the original Tron.
