Why isn't Doctor Soong horribly inbred?

The “Picard” Season Three “The Ready Room” interview with Brent Spiner (Episode 8) delves into him playing multiple Soongs and androids, and he reminds Wil Wheaton (and us) that Keye Luke was originally cast as Dr Soong for “Brothers”.

Using Brent as Dr Soong was a last-minute switch, which Brent found both challenging and terrifying.

Playing all those Soongs kept things interesting for him over the decades.

Do you mean "Brothers"? Soong didn't appear in "Datalore".

Sorry, yeah, mentioned in "Datalore" but not onscreen until "Brothers".

Mind you, "Brothers" first aired on 8th October 1990, and Keye Luke died of a stroke on January 12, 1991, at the age of 86. So having Brent Spiner able to play Soong - at various ages in flashback - plus various relatives over decades, it was probably a good and practical decision.

Although: the original story for "Datalore" was originally very different to the version that aired, and may have featured Dr Soong. Lore was originally female. She was described as a Red Adair-type, travelling the galaxy as the futuristic version of an oil well firefighter.

Yes, I believe part of the reason why this original concept of Lore went evil was because they didn't think it was fair they had to continually put themselves in danger for others by design rather than by choice.

I love that idea that Soong is one person, just very long lived, like John from The Man From Earth who found out in his adult life that he could not really die.

I'm guessing that inbreeding is one of the reasons the Soongs went into genetic engineering. ;)

They wanted to keep themselves from not deteriorating from one generation to the next!
