Why is toxic fandom destroying everything?

Gangster stories almost always have this problem

The Godfather was supposed to be a story about the horrors of Organized Crime and how racist and misogynistic the whole setup was. But instead because Coppola made them all look so classy and cool, it made people develop a big fascination with "Classy Mobsters" and real Mobsters started modeling themselves on Vito.

I thought the intention was that legitimate business, police, government often were no better than mobsters (a lot of critics that organized crime was just particularly intense form of capitalism) but a lot of the public interpreted as mobsters were just as good as legitimate business, police, government (which may or may not really be same meaning).

That's one of the misinterpretations...mainly because the movie did a bad job of showing the mobsters as anything but classy and efficient and the like.

That was one of the key points of The Godfather; the film shined a light on the corruption of so-called legitimate enterprises or government, and it did not portray the life as "classy" or anything to aspire to, but a situation that went from bad to worse, costing not only physical life, but the soul of the one person who wanted nothing to do with the family business. Most of the characters were despicable and openly morally bankrupt to the point anyone watching the film was not going to think that was a life to seek or emulate (that's more of a Goodfellas problem). Among numerous factors, it that's downward slide of a once good man into the very thing he resented that made The Godfather an instant classic.

Folks misunderstood the whole thing with Michael too. They saw his fall and misinterpreted it as "If you're going to be a Mafia Don, be like Vito and not like Michael".

Millions of angry male audience members are horribly media illiterate at best and at worst identify a bit too much with the villain protagonist (with The Boys, you have absolute fools who ironically think Homelander is the hero. . . .
My brother is a Trump supporter who loves THE BOYS. He's a well-read Yale graduate who went ex-liberal for reasons of his own. Since I haven't seen the show yet, I don't know his character preferences.

Vito at least was more scrupulous than Michael in the end. Michael was more scrupulous than Vito in the beginning. You might say Kay was the one woman not sidelined in the first film......until Neri closed the door on her at the end. The most blatantly racist comments in the movie are spoken by Woltz, Sonny and Tataglia, and all three take major falls of a sort.

I have three brothers and no sisters, and after rewatching THE GODFATHERs I like to think I'm more Hagen-ish than Michael-ish, but there's certainly much Fredo and occasional bits of Sonny in me. That's no doubt true for my brothers in turn.

The Boys took a "Hit" in the last season because it decided to drop pretenses and tell any Conservatives watching "Look I'm sorry it took you this long to get it but we've been mocking Right Wingers way more than anyth

Being more right of center I have given up on Hollywood not taking shots at those who don't lean more liberal. And frankly, I don't care. Hollywood productions and such don't dictate my personal values. The whole "woke" label pisses me off because it is no longer educational, nor does it actually do anything except divide. I loathe it as a label, despite enjoying media from many different political sides.

Absurdity.

Have you seen The Franchise yet? Like with South Park, no one is immune from criticism.

^ Should be the reason-to-be for all on earth.

Morpheus 02 so accurately pointed out the origins of "woke" in this post, and how it has been appropriated by white progressives (ruthlessly so, in my opinion) for their own manipulative ends (which--in all obviousness--would not be a first for that happening to the creators of that term).

It's not a matter of criticism but caricature. How often things like "right winger" or "conservative" or "fundamentalist" as an insult without understanding. And the opposite happens the other direction but it definitely feels less critical and more mocking.

It happens but it's why I take comments of "too left" or "too right" as completely unserious.

I had read in a NEW YORKER piece that its creators were MOR equal opportunity offenders (which can benefit some comedies and dramas)...........but I'll definitely ask Stepford-Bro what he thinks now.:bolian:

Did Anwar get raptured??

I am my own second largest critic, the wife as always is number one. Everyone else has to take a number.
As a story writer, I was never a fan of Trek past TOS and always considered Fan films that simply retell a trek episode as lazy even though I understand the reasons for doing so.
The few stories I've written as a star trek flick are sitting at the bottom of the local city dump where they belong. The ones produced are simply adapted writings told from the bridge of a star fleet ship.
As far as toxic comments, I feel left out. I get a lot of "That's a story Trek never told".
When I do finish a story, I send it thousands of miles away where it is edited and turned into a fan film production with little additional input from me. I trust the studio to make the proper changes and then a year or two goes by and I sit back and see what comes out.
I do a lot of community work, helped head cattle, put on a senior lunch, sit in on our board meetings, work with high school students all which cuts deeply into my writing time.
If some poster wants to make an ass out of themself, it just might end up in my next story. so there's that.
