Why does the Grand Nagus travel by shuttle?

In something of a reverse setup, the Nagus might not have direct control of any major starships, either through government ownership or fealty arrangements. Rather, the profitable arrangement for him might be some sort of a lease contract...

Of course the Ferengi government doesn't own any ships. Big government = SOCIALISM!

^The Ferengi governent DID have big ships. We saw them in TNG.

Plus, the Republicans have, in recent history, been bigger supporters of military spending than the Democrats.

What Ferengi government?

Corporations probably run everything on Ferenginar. Kind of like the Alphaverse from Charlie Jade - a world where there is, in the most literal sense, no government as we understand the term, and all facets of life are run by corporations.

There has to be some kind of government for the Ferengi. The Ferengi Commerce Authority has some kind of authority to regulate Ferengi-owned and -operated businesses.

Sure, but who has the authority to place people in a goverment role with that Ferengi Commerce Authority

...kind of like CEO's today flying in little jets instead of large airliners?

...or taking a small private car instead of the bus?

Indeed, it's difficult to see why a small and fast private spacecraft wouldn't meet the Ferengi criteria of opulent luxury (Quark certainly was elated to have access to a comparable craft in "Little Green Men"), or why a ruthless business leader of the highest level wouldn't prefer such an aggressive and independent mode of transportation.

The issue of defensive capabilities has been discussed already, and IMHO isn't particularly relevant. How - and whether - Zek's no doubt extensive staff travels with him is left unclear; does Zek perhaps prefer to operate his business empire via advanced IT aids and secure communications rather than a buzzing swarm of physically present assistants?

Ocean going ships may provide a better analogy. The head of a big financial corporation would travel in:

A) A private yacht
B) A luxury liner
C) A battlecruiser

For this analogy, we must assume a world without aircraft. However, said world is not the 1910s - it is more like an alternate 1980s, without aircraft, yet with a good supply of hydrofoils, hovercraft and insanely muscular power boats, any of which might be preferred by that world's counterpart to Richard Branson when he crosses the Atlantic for a business meeting.

I've come late to this thread, so apologies if someone else has said this. I've always thought that DS9 didn't feature any Ferengi marauders as it would make the audience think of the Ferengi as a military race, rather than an economic one.
