Kira's reaction at the beginning of being stuck in the game about how Starfleet officers finding such a situation fascinating and not being what she signed up for was priceless.

But that was the best part of the episode. 10 seconds worth!! They should have made more of it like that.

Which, at the end of the day, is what we wanted to see... truly alien lifeforms. We didn't get it with the makeup, but we sure got it from the cultural and technological aspect of it.

But they didn't seem that different!! And it looked like a desperate attempt to make them seem different! And they still had 2 arms & legs & eyes & ears!! WHY??? WHY I ask? (why?)

I think the premise of Move Along Home was a really good idea, just extremely poor execution. They could have done any number of cool challenges and instead they had to repeat a nursery rhyme.

I always saw it as since she grew up in Cardassian labor camps she never actually learned how to play as a child.
In other words if it's awkward it's because she only knows how to conduct a child's game as a military exercise.

Yeah i just watched this ep again as part of my current rewatch i hated this when i originally watched it, no i don't hate it as much, the Quark parts of the story was ok, but the Game part with Sisko and crew was goofy as Hell, it just was'nt directed well. Also Avery Brooks is Ok when he's in his commanding Sisko re: Hawk Ass kicker mode, especially post Shaved Head, but scenes where he had to emote, laugh, cry, sing etc, does'nt play into his strengths as an actor

Sisko just saw Bashir and Kira knocked back by an ionic field for failing to copy the girl's moves thoroughly. Sure, Dax made it through without singing, but he wasn't going to take any chances.

2 minutes in, Kira looks like she wishes she could be beamed to the USS EntVoyager.

Sci-fi is never an easy genre, especially if someone writes a plot or narrative that seems bizarre. I always thought that was the point? It's normal for the Wodi, or Exxilons on that planet in "Death to the Daleks", or reading a book backwards to open up a maximum security galactic prison or other dimension (Doctor Who's "Shada", or Sapphire & Steel's "story 1" respectively.) I'd argue the viewer is supposed to few weird because it's not something one would expect, even if it seems simple or silly. (Psychological barriers?)

And this was DS9 before it got all adult, season 1 did feel all-family-inclusive, later seasons are definitely for more mature audiences.

And Avery may have hated doing the scene, let's face it - we all would feel weird in having to do it, but he's the one that pulls off the scene with the deepest conviction despite its silliness and keeping the straight face throughout.

Or I'm thinking into it too much.

If nothing else, the costume budget was stellar since the Wodi really work it with those detailed, color-rich outfits that look positively pallid on DVD.

This episode would be a lot better without the "We were only kidding" ending.

If the aliens were a combination of The Final Reflection style Klingons and the Grandmaster from the old Marvel comics they could have been cool. Instead of, y'know, hopscotch dorks.
