Why does sisko do this?!

Captain alex

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I got reminded of this by another post in this forum. Remember that episode "alamarain" of DS9?

Why, when the other staff spoke the rhyme , why OH WHY did captain sisko sing it ?

It's so awkward. :brickwall:

And the way Kira did those steps. Awkward city.

Avery Brooks said in at a convention that this was one of his two least favorites moments on the show and I agree one of the worst moments of DS9 ever! The other was the Klingon makeup he had to wear in the season 5 premiere.

My interpretation is that Sisko was enjoying it, and hadn't yet run out of patience. Isn't this the first of the 'games' they had to go through?

This gets to the heart of the matter..

Why was this script ever approved?

Probably didn't have enough good story ideas around, had to meet their air date, so used this. Perhaps hoped it would come out better int he final draft of the script.

Yay! Replies! I'm popular finally!!:D Now I just need real life friends.

So firstly, to the first reply- sorry I didn't realise it was so strict my apologies :adore:

To another person who replied who said it's because the girl sang.. that doesn't explain it because they already realised they don't need to sing to get through the force field (as dax did before him & the doctor & Kira did). So THATs that theory put to rest ! :cardie:

To the person who thinks sisko was enjoying it , ur right that's the only explanation & is how it comes across. But it's out of character for the scene where he's clearly not enjoying it :ack: the same with Kira.

It makes them suddenly look like actors.

I didn't say he had to do it, I said he did it because she did. There is a difference. :)

"I didn't say he had to do it, I said he did it because she did. There is a difference. :)"

Why would he sing if he didn't have to, unless he enjoys it? That makes no sense.

Upon rewatching, the way the scene plays out, I simply took it as Sisko sort self-mockingly leaning harder into the Allamarain-ing because that just fits his sense of humor.

The same reason "Shades of Grey", "Threshold" and most of S1 of ENT were approved.

And what reason is that? Lol

Perhaps hoped it would come out better int he final draft of the script.

Or more likely it sounded good written down but not good in practise!

But that's just awkward city.

The portrayal of the different characters in that scene never bothered me, but I'm one of those people. You know. That don't dislike the episode.

As for the question why Avery Brooks decided to actually sing that part - what @Tosk said.

I am one of those people, too. I truly enjoyed the episode.

I know I am in the minority of my enjoyment of this episode, but "MOVE ALONG HOME", despite some missteps (no pun intended), I thought was a very clever concept. And Kira's reaction at the beginning of being stuck in the game about how Starfleet officers finding such a situation fascinating and not being what she signed up for was priceless. For me, it was a fun episode, and another showcase in how strange and different the Gamma Quadrant really is from the Alpha Quadrant.

Which, at the end of the day, is what we wanted to see... truly alien lifeforms. We didn't get it with the makeup, but we sure got it from the cultural and technological aspect of it.
