Why do you rank TFF highly?

Nope the opening scene is great. In fact I've never seen anybody make fun of the opening scene before in all my years on this site.

I'll tell you what's hard to believe somebody sensing from the first opening scene of the movie that there was something wrong.
That comes off to me as...
' I'm so smart I knew from the opening scene....."

Why thank you. It's always nice to be the target of ad hominem... NOT!!!

But you see two people of different species on a planet, it stands to reason that at least one of them is not native to the planet.

"Ad hominem." Wow awesome. LOL.
And exactly how does this incredible knowledge and foresight in seeing the first scene of the movie and realizing the movie was in trouble relate to a thread titled -- "Why do you rank TFF highly?
I guess that seems to some people be an open invitation for a bunch of lazy nitpicking.

I am curious though, why is it so incredible?

I mean the guy says: "Wow, you're a Vulcan!!!" or something to that effect... Doesn't that imply that Vulcans are rare on that planet? And most likely not indigenous?

I am going to do you a favor I'll keep my next sally to myself.:D

Looks like I inadvertently caused a little drama in here with my comment about my 15 year old self. Sorry about that folks

I thought the movie looked intense, different, and immediately engaging by the way the pre-credits scene unfolded. I thought it was awesome.

Different strokes and all.

It's a little surprising that he didn't assume he was a Romulan, what with them being 1/3rd of the governing powers...

I admit, I rather liked the opening pre-credits scene. We all have our views and as long as we can be polite in describing those views, we can voice them.
As for how Sybok got to Nimbus 3, we know that there are other means of transport besides starships.

An iconian gateway? Sybok is from the mirror universe?

What else?

TOS canon firmly established that there is a big difference between a run-of-the-mill spaceship and a Starship. It’s very possible Sybok took a ride in to Nimbus on a junkheap, but knew full well that he’d need the capabilities of a starship to complete his mission.

^Exactly.
All the way back (at least) to Merrick saying -- "not a spaceship but a 'STARSHIP', a very special ship and crew." -- they made that distinction.
Any number of faster than light vessels could transport peoply to Nimbus, but Sybok needed a "starship" to have any .chance of breaching the barrier. He needed to take the hostages to provoke one of the great powers to to provide the type of ship he needed.
Pretty simple to figure when you're not bending over backwards trying to pretend the script/ movie was off the rails from the very first scene.

Well, when I was referring to my 15 year old self (30 years ago), I was referring to something feeling off about the tone and dialogue. I still can’t point my finger to exactly what it was about the pre-credits scene that filled me with doubt or gave me an “oh no feeling” at the time.

Anyway, I started this thread and I’m glad to see so many responses. I was really curious about the original topic I started and would like to reiterate that I do have an affection for Star Trek V and my comments about the pre-credits scene probably don’t belong in this thread and might’ve been better reserved for another thread.
