But you see two people of different species on a planet, it stands to reason that at least one of them is not native to the planet.

And exactly how does this incredible knowledge and foresight in seeing the first scene of the movie and realizing the movie was in trouble relate to a thread titled -- "Why do you rank TFF highly?

I am curious though, why is it so incredible?
I mean the guy says: "Wow, you're a Vulcan!!!" or something to that effect... Doesn't that imply that Vulcans are rare on that planet? And most likely not indigenous?

It's a little surprising that he didn't assume he was a Romulan, what with them being 1/3rd of the governing powers...
You have a point, plus the fact that he wasn't as stiff as the garden variety Vulcan should have made it seem even more likely.
I admit, I rather liked the opening pre-credits scene. We all have our views and as long as we can be polite in describing those views, we can voice them.
As for how Sybok got to Nimbus 3, we know that there are other means of transport besides starships.

All the way back (at least) to Merrick saying -- "not a spaceship but a 'STARSHIP', a very special ship and crew." -- they made that distinction.
Any number of faster than light vessels could transport peoply to Nimbus, but Sybok needed a "starship" to have any .chance of breaching the barrier. He needed to take the hostages to provoke one of the great powers to to provide the type of ship he needed.
Pretty simple to figure when you're not bending over backwards trying to pretend the script/ movie was off the rails from the very first scene.

Well, when I was referring to my 15 year old self (30 years ago), I was referring to something feeling off about the tone and dialogue. I still can’t point my finger to exactly what it was about the pre-credits scene that filled me with doubt or gave me an “oh no feeling” at the time.
Anyway, I started this thread and I’m glad to see so many responses. I was really curious about the original topic I started and would like to reiterate that I do have an affection for Star Trek V and my comments about the pre-credits scene probably don’t belong in this thread and might’ve been better reserved for another thread.
