Why do you rank TFF highly?

Speaking of Genesis, whenever a Genesis song comes on the radio I always say "GENESIS!" like the alien in the bar did in Star Trek III. I have a friend at work who likes Star Trek also and one day I said that while at work when a Genesis song came on the radio and after I said it he then said, "Genesis is music forbidden"

Victim of circumstance doesn't mean misunderstood, but for Khan, and the Black man who killed for his dying daughter, there are factors in the story which were out of their control = Admiral Marcus.

Thomas Harewood was the character. Why was it necessary to call out his skin color? How many other characters in the film killed people to save their daughter?

All they needed to do to fix the fact that it took such a short time to get to the center of the Galaxy was add a very brief special effect of the ship entering a wormhole and then exiting the wormhole in the vicinity of the galactic center. And that could actually be done if the movie was to be recut and all they'd need to do is add a voice over lines such as "entering Wormhole to galactic center.

...Sha Kaa Ree was to not put the Great Barrier at the center of the galaxy. Much simpler and avoids technostupidity.

yeah also a play on there never being any seatbelts on the bridge.

I doubt that factored into it at all.

So, V would've done a lot better if it was released after the summer.

Maybe, but word of mouth quickly spread that is was b a d, so maybe not.

Or headcanonize that Sybok's "god" was a criminally insane Cytherian, whom they had imprisoned on the planet hidden in the Barrier. He could call to Sybok's mind because of the unique way his radical Vulcan brain works, like V'Ger did to Spock, and affect it the same way they did to Barclay in TNG: the Nth Degree. Klaa's ship was caught in the wake and got pulled along.

...But then, what's so great about a barrier that surrounds only one normal sized planet, no matter where it is...?

Honestly, for all the disdain that people have for this film (and it has certainly lightened up in the past decade and found its audience)...there is only one thing I find TRULY objectionable in the film, and that's the idea that Kirk could free climb El Capitan.

After watching the Free Solo documentary, and understanding the sheer physical and mental preparation that is required, not to mention needing a lifetime of climbing experience, to even attempt such an ascent, makes me roll my eyes at this notion now.

I had that problem back then. Kirk/Shatner is is no way in the right physical shape for that activity. I was looking for clues when I saw the film. Since they focused on the shoes so closely, I was hoping they had something to do with them. But it seems to be product placement for Boreal.

That's my new headcanon explanation. The shoes were some sort of high-tech clingy variety from the late 23rd century...and only a catastrophic fall (like what happened) would present risk to life and limb.

So very very bad. I've only watched that documentary once (back when the Special Edition DVD was first released) and, much like the press conference, it's one of those things I now cannot "unsee."

Star Trek V needed the likes of Douglass Trumbull, he was around not sure if Harve Bennett productions could afford him but his Showscan work and the stuff done for theme park rides were impressive.

You'd think there would have been any number of competent VFX houses available to handle the work besides ILM. Anyone other than the company they went with would have been better it seems. Trumbull certainly did a nice job on TMP.

I just caught that the beans in the campfire scene come from a recipe Bones got from his father, whom we see die later in the movie. I’d never made that connection before.

Yeah, he probably could have done a good job with the Great Barrier, judging by his work on the V'Ger cloud in TMP. And the special effects for TMP really were top notch for 1979.

There are probably half a dozen effects companies that could have done a better job. And today someone could probably do an excellent job with a minimal budget, which is why I wish Paramount would just do it (even though this would be more for hardened Trekkies).

But yeah, you're right about the budget. I'm sure Trumbull would have been over the available budget.

Yes, but with that Cytherian, no IQs were enhanced, quite the opposite actually.

It's not like the Klingons are known for treating prisoners well. I don't recall on the patch, but I think it noted that Kirk was aware of it, and made sure it stuck around.

The patch is big enough you can see it, if you look at the right time, then Kirk is wearing layers and you can no longer see it. But the Klingons are really a bunch of nimrods to have missed something so conspicuous.

Well, he didn't go into thoughtless drivel like STAR TREK 6 in undermining the integrity of the characters; Shatner deserves credit for that.
