Why do Star Trek fans hate Voyager? - Link

In terms of story telling, if there's not a crisis what else are you talking about? It's not as interesting to see someone just going about their day. The drama is in the crisis.

I agree. You need crisis to further character but there are all kinds of crisis. Identity isnt the only one but somehow Star Trek seems to have gotten stuck on this plot point. It started a little with Spock but was manageable. Imo it went off the rails with Data. Then the writers hop over the Voyager and the rut is now a canyon by season 6.

DS9 suffers from it too in Odo and Kira, then later Dax but it doesn't totally monopolize the show because you have political crisis as well.

Maybe part of it is that an identity crisis is something that all of us can relate to. In a world set far in the future with such advanced technology and an entirely different philosohy of life that is something we can all relate to.

I agree and I don't have a problem with it being in Voyager at all. My problem is when it monoploizes the show. True we get the odd episode that isnt but not many.

You mentioned watching the show with your husband who is watching for the first time. Are you watching many episodes in a row? I ask because I recently did this with my boyfriend. He was watching for the first time and we had many marathons. I found that certain things stand out more when you're watching many back to back than when you're watching one a week.

Yes. We are on Netflix.

I've always wanted to ask someone involved in writing for tv if the concept of binge watching has changed the way episodes are written.

Actually it was probably more obvious for the actors as they are basically immersed in it full time. What did Mulgrew say...15 to16 hour days, six days a week? I'm sure it was very noticeable for them.

To be honest though I have always loved the first 5 seasons of Voyager. I really struggled in 6 and 7. Watching with my husband has given me some insight into why.

I should also add we were watching a few episodes a night. It was must watch TV for him. Now in season 7 my husband will miss a few nights without concern. And he loves science fiction. He really enjoys Discovery right know.

I actually haven't thought of that but I wonder if that was the case. They couldn't have Janeway look weak or back down to a man or some such thing about her being a woman.

I didn't get to respond to this earlier so I hope I can now.

I truly believe this is why they never allowed the ideological differences between them to really surface until Scorpion and Equinox which is a shame. They pushed this idea that Janeway was always right.

Case in point Alliances. I was totally frosted when Janeway says at the end she was right, Maquis way is wrong, not doing that again. What! So one little excursion into this and you shut the door permanently. It was frustrating.

For what it is worth I liked the Chakotay character a lot. He had great chemistry with all the other characters so I don't care who portrayed him. Unless an actor is committing some unforgivable crime or publically dishing his fellow actors I dont care what they do. Heck, they can run naked in the street and I'll look the other way. Lol It doesn't affect my opinion of the character in the least.

I agree with this. I think early on they didn't really know what to do with Janeway as a woman. When Voyager was first on I remember some behind the scenes thing where they were talking about this. How tough do they make her. Does she become a bitch or a pushover. They talked about spending a huge amount of time designing her night gown. It had to be femenine, but not too femenine.

Omg really! They needed to take a chill pill. Geesh...

Perhaps she was quick to revert because she never intended to really stray from her principles. Or worse...a writer ploy to keep it moving on so they could at least say they tried. whatever, it wasn't a dazzling episode for me. I was frustrated.

Ha! I had a flash back just now. I can't watch Cullah say, "Excuse me..." without thinking of a fanvideo someone made 10 years ago It was a Voyager Geico commercial. "Excuse me.." *cut scene* Geico:15 mins can save you more on car insurance. hahah

Are there two different episodes where she tries to make friends with the Kazon? I know of the one with the former Kazon slaver people.

I didn't even know at all it had any backlash until I came here.

I remember Voyager being the series my mother was most invested in, Trek wise; she watched it religiously and even bought the whole thing on DVD. That was my only experience with it.

Be more specific. There were a lot of episodes like that ;)

It was a combination of Jeri Taylor disliking the very premise of Voyager in the first place, her wanting Janeway to always be right, and the writers getting fed up with Beltran blowing his dramatic chances so they didn't want to bother with him.
