As someone who grew up in the 80s with TNG, I really don't understand the punching down at Discovery.
First, I recognize Discovery's flaws and am happy to discuss them. However, continuing to call it "STD" and claiming that it makes older Trek somehow better in comparison feels disingenuine.
Yes, the dialogue in Disco is sometimes misplaced which makes it seem more melodramatic than it really is. I am looking straight at scenes like the one in which Saru is asking Burnam about dating T'Rina while a massive destructive force is hurtling toward Earth. The scene would have been way better if it weren't placed during what is essentially a ticking timebomb scene.
However, if the bashers of Disco were as harsh with TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT, there is plenty of writing and episodes in those series that are just as melodramatic, if not straight up bad as anything found on Discovery. DS9 (Or the original STD based upon the new STD crowd) has an entire episode (Heart of Stone) essentially dedicated to Odo staying with "Kira" and expressing his love to her. Voyager as a series doesn't even live up to any of the initial premises of the show. Whether these types of things are tragic flaws or not are debated in each forum and that's great, but if the argument is "this series is trash because 'X.'" then perhaps its simply time to change the channel and allow others to enjoy it instead.
