Why Do All the Conversation Seem So Melodramatic

I wonder if the humans on Disco seem weird and phony to some folks for the same reason Worf weirds out other Klingons: they seem to have drank their cultural kool-ade and don't feel natural in their behavior. Worf holds so strongly to his ideals of what a Klingon is 'supposed' to act like that regular Klingons don't quite know what to do with him. It feels like many if the Disco characters are trying very hard to live out a set of standards about how to be an evolved human, and they don't come off as natural as a result. Pike was a notable departure from this, as he held himself to a high standard, but could still pull off acting like a regular person and not a paragon of virtue. Which is actually weird in itself, because he actually is a paragon of virtue and not at all a regular guy.
Well, wouldn't a more evolved human be very different from the our 21st century sensibilities? I mean, I work in a environment where positive attitudes, stating appreciation, and compliments happen pretty regularly. To some that would probably strike many as weird, but that's the environment cultivated at the office.

It probably wouldn't feel natural either, until you do it.
I will say this the bad writing of STD really makes me appreciate older trek more than ever.
Good. I hope you enjoy it.

I will enjoy Discovery.

IDIC!

I finally took ppls advice here and stopped watching it w about 3 eps to go.

If I recall, people upthread were even debating whether DSC’s dialog is melodramatic. Case in point, PIC this year with often naturalistic or flippant dialog, Raffi and 7, Rios and the doctor, Agnes sometimes. To me it points up the portentious nature of DSC’s dialog, by comparison.

You can't seen to understand that some of us don't like the overly melodramatic speech that everyone spouts off in the show. I will say this the bad writing of STD really makes me appreciate older trek more than ever.

As someone who grew up in the 80s with TNG, I really don't understand the punching down at Discovery.

First, I recognize Discovery's flaws and am happy to discuss them. However, continuing to call it "STD" and claiming that it makes older Trek somehow better in comparison feels disingenuine.

Yes, the dialogue in Disco is sometimes misplaced which makes it seem more melodramatic than it really is. I am looking straight at scenes like the one in which Saru is asking Burnam about dating T'Rina while a massive destructive force is hurtling toward Earth. The scene would have been way better if it weren't placed during what is essentially a ticking timebomb scene.

However, if the bashers of Disco were as harsh with TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT, there is plenty of writing and episodes in those series that are just as melodramatic, if not straight up bad as anything found on Discovery. DS9 (Or the original STD based upon the new STD crowd) has an entire episode (Heart of Stone) essentially dedicated to Odo staying with "Kira" and expressing his love to her. Voyager as a series doesn't even live up to any of the initial premises of the show. Whether these types of things are tragic flaws or not are debated in each forum and that's great, but if the argument is "this series is trash because 'X.'" then perhaps its simply time to change the channel and allow others to enjoy it instead.

What's wrong with calling it STD? That's the letters of its title. Should we just call it D. We call star trek the next generation stng, tng and next gen. So I don't get why we can't call star trek Discovery STD.

Because that's not how it is generally referred to, neither is it how any Trek show is abbreviated. We say VOY, not STV. We say ENT, not STE.

Also because when people use STD as an abbreviation, they know exactly what they are doing, despite all the protestations of innocence and the so-called 'joke' isn't funny.

No offense but too bad. It's not out fault that the producers picked the name. STD is just easier to type. It flows easier.

You never answered my question. Why do you keep watching the show if it annoys you so much?
Because I'm dumb enough to think they'll correct mistakes or even make it separate from TOS. You know how separate timeliness that was created after all the time travel they did.

Especially after 4 seasons. Many of the same people who say they hate discovery, hate picard, hate the previews for SNW, hate Kurtzman are still commenting about each show and episode online, sometimes even posting screen shots of the episodes immediately after they are available. If you don't like a show, if you feel strongly enough that you consider a show bad, which there is nothing wrong with, why not move on to things you do enjoy?

Discovery had had the same showrunner involved since the middle of season 2 and now its entering season 5. It has its style and it is what it is. If you don't like it then at what point do you think it is time to move on?

So you continue to watch a show you hate for years because you are dumb? (your words). The show is entering its 5th season. The things you see as mistakes are obviously things the current producers like about the show and are choosing to do. Why would you think it would change so much?
