I think there's room for Ezri if Farrell had left a season earlier. It's just hard to embed even a *good* character into that last season where creative resources should be devoted to making the DW arc the best it can be in time for the finale. Developing a character from scratch at this point isn't really on .
Alot of time spent developing Ezri hogged ceative real estate that should've been spent on the DW. I think that last season is not the place to have a long running Dax-Worf-Bashir saga and it does hurt the season as awhole. Ezri's merits notwithstanding, I would not have replaced Jadzia at that point of the series if it had been me.
I dislike Neelix characters personally. These quirky chatterbox types with non-jobs to humour them. In fairness, given that they did spend time developing the character, she does stabilise as a descent personality with a convincing role within the ensemble. She's different but the Dax element is there and plausible. She's part of the team. I think the character is a success but with the big price in that it occupied creative space that could've gone elsewhere. .
