Why Didn't People Like Jadzia Dax?

Jadzia did sometimes enjoy toying with or pushing buttons-she moved Odo's stuff around, interfered with Julian trying to land a date with Leeta, and had a bit of a playful if somewhat jerky attitude.

She also could indeed be arrogant or aloof.

Thing is Sisko put up with it because he was buddies with her hosts predecessor. A lot of her antics would not have been so tolerated with another captain in charge.

Amen.

I think the reason people really hate on Dax has less to do with her caliber as an actress than it does the writers implementation of decent story line. Sure her acting was pretty poor at times especially in long drawn out romantic goodbye scenes my god. But the writers didn’t really know what to do with her as a character. She was supposed to have a really cool backstory the episode they made about her past lives each cast member assuming an identity just kind of sucked. Then she was supposed to be this very intelligent science officer but came across as a very lame version of cute/comic relief. Sadly I think the only thing jadzia added as a character was sex appeal. She had a promiscuous past, captain boday, her whole lesbian thing. Even that didn’t work because it’s Star Trek I/we as fans expect more than typecasted hottie. The funny thing is she left the show for Becker which I don’t think people are willing to admit but it really embittered a lot of the fan base. We were stuck with several episodes of Ezri. Garaks summation of Ezri says everything I want to about that character as well.

Do happen to think Jadzia’s the cutest of all the Trek series chicks. Think she’s hotter than seven, Pilar(vulc chick from Enterprise) and way hotter than Troi.

I thought Jadzia was the best looking chick on DS9, so she was like the Troi, T'Pol, Seven, of DS9. Mostly there for eye-candy. The character was kind of dull for someone who had lived so many lives. The character should have had lots of enemies, many former lovers, and friends. Curzon (the former host) has made out to be a very interesting character but we didn't get much except Jadzia reminiscing about him at times. They should have cast someone who could impersonate many different characters. I think Terry Farrell's range as an actress is very limited. Her role on Becker gave her more exposure, but it was also a very limited character who was just there to look pretty and deliver clever one-liners.

I strongly disagree with calling Jadzia "promiscuous". Remember, just because you can binge-watch in a week or two, the events of the show are spread over seven years. We don't actually know that anything beyond dinner happened with Boday. There might have been something with the fire dancer guy at the bachelorette party. We know nothing happened with Bashir except dinner. Even if all the "possibles" were one-night stands, that's still not very many over the course of three years before she was married to Worf. If I knew a woman who had a one-night stand each year, I wouldn't be raising my eyebrows at her or calling her promiscuous.

I do recall Ezri bringing this issue up to Worf and sarcastically saying everyone on DS9 was her lover or something(my memory of the scene is foggy).

So she went on dates with men of differing species(even ferengi) but I'm not sure if she was promiscuous-I don't think she was though.

I didn't think anyone disliked the Jadzia character. Granted I didn't think anyone ever considered her one of their favorites either unless you were just judging in terms of looks. I will say something that is impressive about the character and that she I think has the biggest amount of bulk chemistry on the show. She works well with just about ever character. Great friend to Sisko,Sort of sexual but not sexual thing with Bashir, Explore her Klingon interests with in Worf and also be in love with. Good friend with Quark and one of the few people who doesn't look down on him and can even enjoy letting her hair down with. A great party friend is how I would descibe it. A female friend with Kira which allowed the Kira to sort of soften somewhat in the later seasons. I admit she didn't have much to do with Odo,O'Brien or Jake.

I'm surprised that Jadzia's popularity is in question and not Ezri's. I feel like Ezri is the one who a lot of fans dismiss. I liked Jadzia fine but I preferred Ezri. Probably because in her first appearance, her difficulty fitting in with a pre-established group, imposter syndrome, and uncertainty of her identity and purpose felt very relatable to me. Like a mid-life crisis, kinda.

Jadzia would be an incredibly tough character to write for and an even tougher character to act out. How do you act out being a conglomeration of a half dozen minds but without acting like you have multiple personalities? The character would work a lot better in a book format where the audience can see the inner workings of her mind.

Would the show have worked better if Jadzia had been given Ezri's origin in season one? I think watching her struggle to deal with her extremely complicated inner life(lives?) while trying to find her place on DS9 would have been more compelling and relatable than the cool, confidant, mature character we were given.

But the way it played out we got the best of both worlds, a fully realized Trill and a newbie who struggled. And Ezri mainly struggled because she hadn't prepared her whole life to be joined the way Jadzia had.

I think it's varied over the years. At first, Ezri got a lot of hate simply because she wasn't Jadzia. After DS9 ended, the prevailing opinion gradually seemed to shift to being that Jadzia was arrogant and overbearing, whereas Ezri was a much more relateable character. Then in the last couple of years - and I don't know if the revelation of the exact circumstances of Terry Farrell's exit has had anything to do with this - it seems to have swung back to Jadzia being a competent, capable and ass-kicking officer, with Ezri being seen as... well, Reg Barclay in a dress, basically.

I literally finished the series last night. Bittersweet. I tihnk there is room to like both Jadzia and Ezri, but imo, there is no contest there. Jadzia. Ezri was sweet and cute and kind and had she been a character fromt he beginning, I probably would have really liked her. But, they put her front and center too quickly and there were too many Ezri-centric episodes. I get that they only had one season to build her character, but it would have made more sense to have her be a bit more background. But, Jadzia has six seasons with which we got to know her and she was interesting and confident and beautiful and tough.
